    Notes:

    Shantz, -- Abram, son of the late Frank and Leah (Groff) Shantz, was born April 8, 1889; passed away at his home after a long illness; aged 65 y. 8 m. 16 d. Early in his youth he accepted Christ as his Saviour and became a member of the Erb Street Mennonite Church, where he remained a faithful member until death. In March, 1917, he married Ada Eby, who preceded him in Sept. 1918. On July 6, 1921, he married Beulah Eby. Surviving are his wife and 4 daughters (Doris--Mrs. Eden Good, Waterloo, Ont.; Audrey--Mrs. Orval Reist. June--Mrs. Morgan Feick, and Eileen--Mrs. Ronald Williamson, all of Kingsdale), 5 grandchildren, 3 sisters (Mrs. Ida Schlueter, Mrs. Ephraim Bearinger, both of Waterloo, and Mrs. Aaron Sauder, of St. Jacobs, Ont.), and 2 brothers (Albert, Waterloo, and Moses, Lexington). Funeral services were held at Erb Street Mennonite Church, Waterloo, Ont., in charge of J. B. Martin, assisted by Clare Shantz and Leonard Haarer.

    Shantz. - Franklin Shantz, son of Moses and Susannah Shantz, was born Sept. 14, 1856; died at his home in Waterloo, Ont., Jan. 1, 1929; aged 72 y. 3 m. 17 d. He was married to Leah Groff who predeceased him nearly five years ago. He united with the Mennonite Church in early life in which faith he died. He was of a quiet disposition, but we believe his walk and conduct spoke louder than his words. He expressed himself as being ready to meet his Lord and had a desire to depart. He leaves 3 sons, 3 daughters, 1 adopted daughter, 26 grandchildren, 4 brothers, and 5 sisters, besides a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Bro. Noah Hunsberger and at the Waterloo Mennonite Church by Bros. Jesse Martin and Jonas Snider.

    Shantz. -Leah (Groff) Shantz was born in Waterloo twp., Ont., June 11, 1856; died at Waterloo, Feb. 3, 1924; aged 67 y. 7 m. 23 d. In 1884 she was united in marriage to Frank Shantz. To this union were born 3 sons and 3 daughters. She leaves her husband, 3 sons, 3 daughters, 1 adopted child, 19 grandchildren, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, and a host of relatives and friends. She united with the Church in early years and remained a consistent member until death. The funeral was held on Feb. 7 at the Waterloo Mennonite Church conducted by Bro. Noah Hunsberger and Oscar Burkholder, after which she was laid to rest in the Waterloo Mennonite Cemetery

    Eby.-Benjamin M., son of the late Benjamin L. and Barbara (Martin) Eby, was born at St. Jacobs, Ont., April 13, 1860; passed away after a short illness on Oct. 19, 1948; aged 88 y. 6 m. 6 d. In early manhood he was converted under the Gospel preaching of the pioneer Mennonite evangelist, John S. Coffman, and united with the Mennonite Church, of which he remained a member until death. For the last twenty years he resided in St. Jacobs, where he moved after retiring from his farm near Waterloo. In 1881 he was married to Esther Brubacher, who predeceased him in August 1924. In 1927 he was married to Susannah Bearinger, who survives. Also surviving are 5 daughters (Luella-Mrs. Edgar Snider, Mabel-Mrs. Josiah Bearinger, Mina-Mrs. Alvin Shantz, Beulah-Mrs. Abram Shantz, all of Waterloo, Ont.; and Vera-Mrs. Isaac Hurst, Bloomingdale, Ont.), 3 sons (Phares, Kitchener, Ont.; Samuel, Toronto, Ont.; and Alpheus, Elmira, Ont.), 12 grand-children, and 5 great-grandchildren. Two daugh-ters predeceased him. Funeral services were conducted at the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church on Oct. 21 by Roy S. Koch, assisted by Noah Hunsberger. Interment was made in the First Mennonite Cemetery at Kitchener, Ont.

    Eby.--Esther Eby (nee Brubacher) was born Feb. 5, 1863; died at her home, 53 Menno St., Waterloo, Ont., Aug. 30, 1924; aged 61 y. 6 m. 25 d. She was united in marriage Nov. 8, 1881 to Benjamin Eby, which union was blessed with 3 sons and 7 daughters: Phares, of Kitchener; Luella, Mrs. Edgar Snider, Waterloo; Mable, Mrs. Joshiah Bearinger, Waterloo; Mina, Mrs. Alvin Shantz, Waterloo; Beulah, Mrs. Abram Shantz, Waterloo; Samuel, Alpheus, and Vera at home. Two daughters preceded her to the glory world. A sorrowing husband, 8 children, 7 grandchildren, 2 brothers and 2 sisters remain to mourn her loss. Early in life she gave her heart to the Lord and joined the Mennonite Church of which she remained a faithful member till death. She had been suffering patiently from cancer for two years. Funeral services were conducted at the home and at East End Mennonite Church. Burial in adjoining cemetery. Brethern Jonas Snider and Noah Hunsberger were in charge of the services.

On March 18th, 1849, he was married to Susannah, daughter of Jacob C. and Elizabeth (Cressman) Snider. She was born April 4th, 1840. Soon after their marriage they moved on the farm they still possess, his father's farm, being composed of west half of lot No. 9, German Company's Tract. Here they raised a family of twelve children"

    SHANTZ - Moses Shantz was born on the 22nd of August 1819, about three miles north of Waterloo, Ont. On the 18th of March, 1819* he was married to the youngest daughter of the late Bro. Jacob C. Snyder, of Waterloo. He was a member of the Mennonite church since his youth. Deceased was afflicted for about 6 years, and suffered much pain, which however was patiently borne through all the weary years, until his final release on the 17th of January 1897, at the ripe old age of 77 years, 4 months and 26 days. He leaves a sorrowing wife, six sons and six daughters, also thirty-six grandchildren to mourn the loss of a kind companion and father. His was the first death out of this large family. The funeral was held on the 20th from his late residence. Interment at Martin's M.H., where many relatives and friends assembled to pay their last tribute of love and respect to one who had been so dearly loved and highly esteemed in life.     Shantz. - Susannah Snider, wife of the late Moses Shantz, was born in Waterloo, Ont., April 4, 1830; died May 14, 1916; aged 86 y. 1 m. 10 d. The deceased was married to Moses Shantz Mar. 18, 1849, who preceded her 19 years ago. This union was blessed with a family of 12 children, of whom 11 are still living. There are 50 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren of whom nearly all are living. She was the last of the Snider family. Her brothers and sisters have all preceded her. By her passing away, the family loses a kind and patient mother, the church a consistent member, and the fruits of her exemplary and devoted Christian life, will never be forgotten. Funeral services on May 17, conducted at the house by Bro. Noah Stauffer, and at the Waterloo Mennonite Church by Bro. Stauffer and Noah Hunsberger, from Job 5: 26. Burial at the Martin Cemetery.

    Historic Building:
    Built in 1867 it was a one story frame house. In 1978 it was listed in very good condition and was demolished about 2004. It was a example of the Regency style with a low hipped roof, verandah along the facade with some attempt at some trelliage. A style rarely used in Kitchener.

    DEATH: Wismer.-Lydia (Musselman) Wismer was born July 22, 1838, near Conestoga, Ont. In March 1862 was married to Samuel Brubacher, living in matrimony 14 years when he died. After living in widowhood 14 years she was again married to Bishop Daniel Wismer of Kitchener, Ont., living in matrimony 19 years when he died, living in widowhood again for 10 years. She was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church from her youth. Died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Ben Eby, near Waterloo, Ont., Nov. 1, after being bedfast for nearly 11 months, aged 80 y. 3 m. 9 d., leaving to mourn her departure, 2 sons, 3 daughters, 22 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren. Only brief services were conducted at the home on account of influenza epidemic, by Bishop Jonas Snider. Buried at First Mennonite Cemetery, Kitchener, Ont.

    Death of an Aged Citizen

    The death took place yesterday of a highly respected resident of the county in the person of Mrs. Lydia Wismer at the ripe old age of 80 years, 3 month and 9 days, the deceased passing away at the home of Mr. Benjamin Eby one mile north west of Waterloo.

    Funeral on Sunday afternoon at 2.30 from home of Mr. B. Eby where a private service will be held. Interment will take place at East End Cemetery Kitchener where friends will have a chance to view the remains.
