    Notes:

    WILLIAM SCHEIFLE.

The visitor who calls upon this gentleman will not lack anything to keep him interested, as he is a fluent talker and advances many ideas that are worth noting. He comes from. German extraction. His father was a native of Wurtemberg, Germany, and his mother is an Alsatian. Mr. Scheifle was born where he lives, forty-nine years ago. He had an early training on the farm, and knows what hard work is. In 1876 he was married to Mary, youngest daughter of the venerable Conrad Stroh, of near Conestogo. The couple started housekeeping, and with the determination to pay for a five- thousand-dollar farm. The task was a herculean one, but both having had a thorough training in agricultural pur- suits, were consequently prepared for the worst. Frequently during the harvest season he would go out in his fields at three and four o'clock in the morning and swing his cradle until breakfast, and during the day would help his neighbor, while his wife would bind the grain he had cut in the early morning. At night he would return home and shock the grain, and again swing the cradle by moonlight until ten or eleven o'clock. They accomplished their aim, and to day can survey one hundred and one acres of choice. land well improved, a substantial brick residence and all necessary outbuildings which they can call their own, and have a neat sum to spare. I refer to this merely to show what can be done if a man and his wife work in harmony together, and take hold with a determination to win. Fifty years ago, seventy acres of this land was purchased for seven hundred dollars. Twenty-two years ago, Mr. Scheifle bought it for five thousand dollars, and
its value will exceed that amount today.

On this farm in a field commanding a magnificent view of the majestic Conestogo and its fertile bottoms are unmistakeable evidences that the noble red man who was monarch of all he surveyed in this region, and flourished long before the advent of his pale-faced brother, found it a paradise to live in. Over a level expanee of ten or fifteen acres are four or five dark spots from thirty to forty yards in circumference, each a few rods distant from the other. They are easily distinguised from the natural soil of the field, and the seeker after Indian relics is often rewarded in finding pieces of flint, arrow heads and numerous other articles in common use in the wigwam of the wily sons of the forest. Large quantities of broken stone are also to be found, which were undoubtedly the work of Indians Tradition has it that they had coal for fuel, the whereabouts of which was never revealed to the whiteman. The dark soil in these spots is good ground for the supposition that coal was the fuel in use and that it was found in the immediate vicinity of this farm. A chemical test would doubtless disclose a large per cent. of coal dust in the soil.

Mr. Scheifle is also a horse fancier and has several fine animals in his stables. One, a splendid and intelli- gent looking animal, is from a noted German cavalry horse. In municipal affairs Mr. Scheifle has also had some experience, having served one term in the township council, three years as school trustee and is at present town- ship collector. In this capacity he has proven himself to be worthy of the honors thrust upon him.

Some of the oldest settlers in this section will be the subject of my next letter. H, N.

    Conestogo

The Grim Reaper. Death has once more made his appearance in our midst and cut short the life of one not yet old in years, but who was not yet in the prime of life. The call did not come sudden, but after a lingering illness of about 1 ½ years, during which time she had to endure much pain. Deceased was Mary Scheifele (nee Stroh) who was born on May 19th 1850 in the township of Woolwich near Elmira and when yet a child her parents Mr and Mrs. Conrad Stroh moved to the old Stroh homestead about a mile east of Conestogo where she spend the remainder of her early life. On Dec 13th, 1874 she was married to Wm Scheifele with whom she spend her married life on the farm on which she died. She died on Thursday morning, Aug 2, aged 56 years 2 mos and 14 days. She is survived by the bereaved husband and with him there is left to mourn the loss of a loving mother and sister, 3 children, 2 grandchildren, the children being Annie, wife of Emanuel Hemmerich of Elmira, Charlie at home, and Wm. of Berlin. There are also four brothers, Yost and Charles of Elmira, Jacob of St. Jacobs, and George of Conestogo and numerous other friends. She was predeceased by her mother who died about 12 years ago, her father about 7 and sister Mrs. Adam Herman about 3 years ago. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon to the Lutheran church and cemetery for service and burial, the service being conducted by Rev. O. Liuke [?]. The large number of friends who came to pay a last tribute of respect would show that she was well and favorably known.

MICHAEL FRIES, SR. - Only a month after the death of his wife there passed away at his home here Michael Fries, Sr. The shock of his life partner's death and the pain of the parting was too much for his enfeebled body to withstand. The deceased was born near Heidelberg in 1889 (or possibly 1839, blurred). At the age of 22 he was married to Elizabeth Frey. They took up the duties of married life on a farm north of West Montrose, then mostly primeval forest. Here the deceased put in many a day's hard labor in clearing the forest and getting the land ready for the plough, while his wife looked after the housework and raised a large family of robust boys and girls. With industry they succeeded in building up a fine home for themselves. After about forty years of farm life, Mr. and Mrs. Fries came to spend the remaining years in quiet retirement in Elmira. They enjoyed good health until a few years ago when the infirmities of old age began to make themselves felt. The deceased is survived by a large family. They are Solomon of Saskatchewan, Veronica (Mrs. Henry Dobberthein of Iowa, Michael of Elmira, Margaret (Mrs. Wm. Dobberthein) of Elora, Daniel of Kitchener, Jacob of Elmira, John of Bollingbrook, Ont., Katie (Mrs. Plate) of Kitchener, Lydia (Mrs. Levi Snyder) of Woolwich. Christina, (Mrs. Arthur Rhodes) of Kitchener. Magdalena (Mrs. Armand Fulcher) of Elmira. One brother, Daniel of Kitchener, also 54 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren survive the deceased. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon. Rev. L. Kalbfleisch of St. James church officiated. The pallbearers were six grandsons; Clayton, Fred, Clarence and Gordon Fries, Herbert Dobberthein and Gordon Plate.

A frame building erected by Frederick Gaukel about 1833 as shelter for the considerable number of immigrants coming to Berlin at that time. In 1837 it was made into a dwelling for John Stroh, uncle of Jacob Stroh. Two children were born in this building, Katie, in 1838, (she married Jacob Oswald, still living, now 93 years of age), and Henry Stroh, born in 1840.

    Hall's Lane.

A brick building erected about 1850. John Klein, father of John Klein of Buffalo, was the first occupant. Later the building was used as a printing office, first by the "Berlin Chronicle", William Jaffray editor and proprietor, and later by the "Berliner Journal", Rittinger & Motz. The site is now occupied by the Lockhart garage.

The Franklin Hotel, a handsome, good-sized frame building, erected by Philip Roth about 1856. Successive hotel-keepers were John Klein, Levi Gaukel, Frederick Riegelman, who later moved to Buffalo, and Jacob Weber. Weber was occupant in 1874 when the hotel was burned down. The fire started in the barn at the rear of the hotel. The hotel shed, next south, extended, at right angles, from Queen Street to the barn.

A one and one-half story frame building lengthwise with the street occupied by Christopher K. Nahrgang whose parents came from Hessen, Germany, about 1835. He was married to a Miss Zinkann of New Hamburg.

A stone building used as a tailor shop by Mr. Nahrgang who was deaf and dumb. His wife helped him in the business. She lived to be 87. It was in this building that John Motz of the "Journal" and eventually County Sheriff, learned the tailoring trade.

A one and one-half story dwelling, erected about 1857, occupied by George Fischer, barber, who had his shop on King Street. A later occupant was George Lutz, a cabinet maker in Hoffman's factory and after him Henry Schaefer's mother.

A frame building lengthwise with the street, the church of the Evangelical denomination, erected in 1841. In 1866 it was replaced by the brick building still standing, now used as stores and upstairs dwellings.

A one and one-half story frame building with kitchen at the rear erected by William Becking, wagonmaker, about 1848. Becking was noted as a hunter. White hare and passenger pigeons, practically extinct long ago, were abundant at that time.

Becking's wagon-shop and lumber yard at the corner of John Street with the customary incline and stair to the second story of the shop. Up this incline the wagons were drawn to the paint shop. Valentine Gildner, at the corner of King and Benton Streets, did the blacksmith work for Becking's wagons.

    John Street.

A one and one-half story house occupied by H. Baedecker in 1860 and later by Adam Doering.

Rev. F. W. Tuerk's residence erected about 1860 by Henry Rothaermel, a carpenter. The matching and planing was all done by hand, slow but thorough work. Window sashes, panel doors and all other requirements were made in the same manner. A skilled workman at that time was expected to he able to do painting as well as carpenter work. A single room in the shape of a square turret on the ridge of the building was Rev. Tuerk's study. The house was up-hill about twenty feet above the street level so that the study on top gave a good outlook. The site is now occupied by the York Apartments.

A frame building one and one-half story high.

Nothing but a building used as an ashery between that and Joseph E. Schneider's house and farm buildings.
