    Notes:

Obituary: By the death of Mr. Kasper Hergert, which occurred last Saturday, Elmira has lost one of her oldest citizens. He had been a resident of Elmira since the year 1855, living in the same house on the corner of Church and Centre streets, following the trade of custom tailoring and leading a modest and honorable life which won for him the respect of the community. He was born in Kur Hessen, Germany, in the year 1830, and emigrated to Canada when 25 years of age. He was thrice married, his first wife being one Miss Schmidt, who died in 1863 leaving three children. In 1864 he was married to Catharine Schmidt, who died 10 years later. After her death, in the year 1874 deceased was married to one Catharine Zick, who survives him. Fourteen children were born to him during these years of married life. Eight of these have preceeded him to eternity, the living ones being Henry, of Toronto, George, of Elmira, Alvin and Mrs. B. Jackson, of Berlin, Mrs. Otto Schmidt of Elmira and Clara at home, all of whom attended the funeral, which was held last Tuesday afternoon. The deceased was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church and was one of the nine who founded the congregation. Twenty-nine years he was caretaker of the church, discharging his duties with extraordinary promptness up to within a short time of his death. The congregation loses in him a consistent member, the family a kind father, the widow a good husband.
