    VICTIM WARNED OFF HIGHWAY

An inquest into the highway death of 68-year-old Clayton Cassel of Plattsville, revealed that several motorists had warned the elderly man to walk along the highway more carefully, but he had refused to do so.

The five-man jury found that he met his death accidentally March 16 when struck by an east-bound car driven by John Battler, of Plattsville, while walking west towards the village along the travelled portion of No 97 Highway, about a half mile east of the village.

Several witnesses testified that Mr. Cassel always walked along the travelled portion of the highway, facing oncoming traffic, and they had to pull toward the middle of the road to pass him.

The accident occurred at 7:30 a. m. when visibility was good. No blame was attached to the driver. A panel truck driver said he almost turned his truck over one day when he swerved to avoid hitting the elderly man.

Norman Rellinger, another driver who goes to work in Plattsville every morning, said he almost hit the man last November as he walked along the highway. "About a week before the accident I told him he was going to get hurt some day and he said that he would look out for himself," he added.

Coroner Dr. II. C. McCaul, of Princeton presided. Jurors were: Clarence M. Bryans, foreman; John B. English, Donald Currah, Stewart Green and Jacob Gofton.
