Mr. Buddell was piloting the plane.

As he got up to 350 or 400 feet, it appears an engine failed and he banked left," said Sgt. Donald Herman of Waterloo township police.

"Mr. Buddell asked the tower' for permission to land, and that is the last they heard."

The officer said the plane had taken off from Runway 25 about 2: 12 p.m. Witnesses said a muffled banging sound could be heard from the direction of the aircraft.

The plane banked steeply to the left with one engine apparently not functioning and crashed into a field about 300 feel from the side of the runway it had Just left.

An investigation is being conducted by Steven Musson, Toronto, of the department of transport, assisted by Waterloo township police under Sgt Herman. No decision has been made on an inquest.

Both victims were thrown from the plane when it nose-dived iota the field. They were killed instantly.

A watch found in the wreck was stopped at 2: 14 p.m.

Although it struck the ground nose first, the plane slid along the ground after impact, spreadling wreckage for several hundred feet.

The Cessna, owned Jointly by Buddell and Douglas Mitten of Hespeler, was valued at $30,000.

Mr. Evans was sales manager with Harold Freure Ltd. and it is believed the two men were heading for the Chicopee area to !inspect the new Chicopee Vale subdivision.

The investigators said they will have nothing to report on the probable cause of the take off failure until the investigation is complete and a report is released by the department of transport.

Evidence has been taken from six eyewitnesses.

The plane had returned to the airport July 3 after a flight by Mr. Buddell, his wife, and two Waterloo friends to Mexico City.

"We left on June 24," said Norman Raitar, 74 Ellis Cres.; Waterloo, who accompanied the Buddells on the trip along with Leonard Snider, 353 Dale Cres.

"It was the first trip I had made with Mr. Buddell and I was impressed by the carefullness and skill he showed in flying the plane. I even congratulated him," said Mr, Raitar.

    TRIP WENT WELL

"Everything went perfectly on the trip, although going and returning we must have landed and taken off again about eight or nine times. I don't know what could have happened Saturday. We had no problems on the Mexico trip."

"I never travelled with a pilot who was more careful in my life,'' said Mr. Snider, who agreed completely with Mr. Raitar's comments.

Born in Waterloo May 30, 1926, Mr. Buddell was the son of Mrs. Flora Buddell and the late Percy Buddell.
