    ________

    AMONG THE FARMERS

    ELIAS HALLMAN

Bordering on the boundary between Oxford and Waterloo counties west side of the Middle Town Line, Located the home of the subject of this sketch. Just a few rods distant acres over in Wilmot township is the home of his birth and where his venerable father and mother and brother Josiah now reside. Here it was that be first saw the light of day, the event took place in the year 1850. He undoubedly had strong attachments for his home and parents, for after serving over twenty-one years under the parental roof he did not wander far away, but has ever since lived within hailing distance of where he had been reared to manhood.

In 1872, about the time be became of age, he was married to Polly, daughter of Mr. Jacob S Bowman, prominent and well known farmer near Haysville, and it was about this time they begen life together in their present home. Here they have labored and enjoyed prosperity for more than a quarter of a century. Mrs. Hallman was born near Waterloo in 1851, being now in her 48th year. To her and her husband have been born four children, three daughters and one son. Jessie the eldest of the family is the wife of Mr. William Richmond, a prosperous young farmer east of Washington; Elwin B., an intelligent and promising young man, is at home. He has attended several terms in the Berlin High School and last season open: several months in the Northwest, Lauretts and Minnota, the youngest daughters, are at home attending school.

Mr. and Mrs. Hallman have been members of the United Brethren church for about twenty five years, and Mr Hallman has served as class leader in the church at New Dundee for period of twenty years. As evidence of their profound sincerity in christian work their home will testify.

Whoever has occasion to step across their threshold will find all that constitutes a true christian home. Parents, children, and all around them, graciously extend the stranger that white souled hospitality and kindness, which at once makes him feel he is one of the family. Oh, if the exemplary conduct of the children and the earnest christian spirit of the parents of this home could prevail in all homes what s heaven-like world we would then live in!

Mr. Hallman, it seems, has not been an aspirant for political office further than being trustee for Union School Section No. 2, Blenheim and Wilmot No. 3. In this capacity he is now serving his fourteenth year. In educational matters he has always taken a deep interest, and to him a good share of credit is due for the modern facilties the section now enjoys. In 1886 the fine large brick school because it can boast of to-day was planned and erected. Mesers Hallman, Iasac Bricker and Isaac Roseuberger were then the trustees. Messrs Bricker and Hallman were detailed as a committee to select a site and visit other sections for the purpose of finding a design. They finally selected that of the Crosshill school. The site for the building was then chosen, it being on Mr. Hallman's farm near the county line and a most commendable one it is. The structure was immediately pushed to completion, and when it was completed and ready for holding school it was considered one of the best planned country school buildings in two counties. It is amply provided with space, being capable of seating about one hundred pupils. In the basement is a large hot air furnace which furnishes abundance of warmth in the school above. In addition to the furnace room there is a good wood shed in the rear and in front there is an ante-room on each side supplied with shelves and hooks for the accommodation of the children to keep their dinners, cloaks, coats, overshoes, etc. In connection there is a fine large play-ground with a gradual slope in every direction, thus affording splendid drainage to keep it perfectly dry.

It may not be intraling upon space and time to insert here that a quarter of a century ago Mr. David Bean, editor of the CHRONICLE, wielded the birch and blue beech in this very section, but that was then in the old building which stands on the opposite side of the road in Wilmot and now used as a dwelling house. The school of that time bears a special distinction from the fact that a number of its pupils bave since become noted as citizens, business men and politicans. First, the teacher, Mr. Bean himself, succeeded in reaching the top rung in the ladder of success in public school teaching, having been tendered the principalship of the Elmira schools while he was still engaged here. Among his pupils were Hon. D K Erb, M P.for South Perth; Josiah Hallman, Reeve of Wilmot township; Irvin Masters, stockholder and general manager of the Plattsville Milling Co; Menno Hallman of the Onterio Life Insurance Co, of Waterloo, and others, some of them prominent farmers of this section, who still have kind recollections of their old teacher.

Returning to the subject of this sketch, Mr. Hallmnn, it is not in the nature of boasting to say that no other farmer in Blenheim or Wilmot has been more prosperous considering the opportunities presented to him. He does not spend many idle moments at home. Daring the winter season in the day time he will be found almost constantly busy looking after his live stock or doing other odd jobs about the place. After the close of the day his time is usually taken up in preparing some subject of a religious nature for his convenience in his church as a class leader, or as singer in some Sunday school entertainment. To his church almost devotedly Mr. Hallman is most devotedly time and money in its behalf. If all those identified with church work were like him Satan's chances of demoralizing the world would become entirely extinct. In his church work and that on the farm Mr. Hallman is greatly assisted by the unflinching devotion of a kind and exceptionally industrious wife, who is not outdone by him in generosity towards those in need or in doing that which is for the best interests of the church.

As a farmer Mr. Hallman has attained his fair share of success. In the cattle line dairy cows have shared a good part of his attention, though he occasionally turns out a number of young beef cattle. He has now in his stables eleven extra good cows that bear evidence of kind treatment and judicious feeding. He has also a fine lot of calves and young cattle. Some of the latter are fit for the butcher now, but it is his intention to keep them over until next season. In horses Mr. Hallman has for years taken a good deal of interest. In 1886 he imported a fine thoroughbred Cydesdale filly from Scotland. Lady Hallman, her register name, is still in his possession and has carried off quite a number of first prizes. Since Mr. Hallman purchased her she has produced a number of excellent animals, she being the mother of three well-jointed youngster at present in his stables. In addition to these there are several other roadsters that bear good records as to speed.

Mr. Hallman is well situated for feeding, etc. In the upper portion of his barn is the latest improved steam cutter and chopping mill, both of which are are separated by a windmill. In implements and vehicles he is as well supplied as any other farmer in the township and has the necessary sheds in which to keep them. Since be took possession of the premises many improvements have been made, both on the barn and the residence. The lives of both he and his faithful wife have not deem mispent and when old age requires them to retire from active physical labors they will have justly merited the richest reward of have they have earnestly and zealously served so long.
