    Notes:

    The death is announced in St. Thomas of Miss Emma Bockus, granddaughter of the late J. K. Andrews, of Galt, and niece of Mr. H. M. Andrews, of Berlin. The young lady was a victim of consumption. Just one year ago her brother, H. F. Backus, for several years assistant to the postmaster at Berlin, died from the same cause.

    Notes:

    Coming to Galt at the age of six with his mother, his mother married Absalom Shade. He began working as a clerk in Shade "Red Store" and by 1835 he had become one of Galt's leading merchants. He also dealt wheat. He co-founded the Dumfries Foundry with James Crombie in 1844. In the early 1850's the price of flour dropped and with other financial dealings he lost nearly everything. He retired early and died in 1861.
