Mrs. William Tilt

Mrs. Louisa Tilt, 207 Chapel St., died Tuesday at Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto. She was 81. Mrs. Tilt was the former Louisa Good, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Good of Blair. She was born in Hamilton. She was a charter member of the Preston chapter of the Eastern Star and a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Freeport Sanatorium. She was predeceased by her husband, William Walter Tilt, in 1932. Surviving are a son, William G. of Toronto; one brother, Earl F. Good, Toronto; four sisters, Mrs. T. I. (Jenny) Willson of Preston, Ina and Mamie Good and Mrs. Lorne (Lollie) Kraft all of Kitchener and two grandchildren. The body is at the Barthel-Stager Funeral Home, Preston, where funeral and committal services will be conducted Friday, at 2 p.m. Interment will be in the Blair cemetery.

Former Clerk and Treasurer of Waterloo Township Passes Away in Preston on Sunday.

Death removed at noon Saturday one of Waterloo County's best known citizens in the person of the late Geo. A. Tilt, former Clerk of Waterloo Township. Deceased was widely known throughout the province both through his business and fraternal connections. He was for many years an employee of the Massey-Harris Company and was actively engaged in the cattlebusiness. In addition, Mr. Tilt was prominent in the I.O.O.F. and A.F. & A.M. Lodges. The late Mr. Tilt, who was in his 70th year, had been in failing health forthe past two years and his death, although it came as a shock to his wide circle of friends, was not entirely unexpected.

Engaged in Cattle Business

Mr. Tilt was born at Blair, December 19, 1857. He was, for a period of 35 years employed by the A. O. Wismer Co., of Brantford, now the Massey-Harris Company. During a part of this period he was also in the cattle business associated with Menno Hallman of Roseville and the late John Brown of Galt. After he severed his connection with the Massey-Harris Company, about 1908, Mr. Tilt conducted a cattle business on a more extensive scale, until a few years ago when he retired. Held Clerkship 35 Years

Mr. Tilt and his father combined to make what is, in allprobability, a record in that, between them, they held the clerkship of the Waterloo Township Council for a period of 65 years, the late G. A. Tilt having been clerkof the Township for 35 years. Prominent in Municipal Affairs in 1918. Mr. Tilt removed his residence to Preston, living in the large stone house now the Memorial Home. Several years ago he moved to his late residence, Dover and William Streets. Since coining to Preston. Mr. Tilt has been prominent in municipal affairs. He was, for a number of years, police magistrate and was also a member of the Park Commission and the Mother Allowance Board at the time of his death. For a number of years he was chairman of the Park Board. Mr. Tilt was a strong Liberal. There survive to mourn his death his widow, two sons, William of Blair and Lloyd of Galt and two daughters, Mrs. Allen Maxwell of Goderich and Miss Ruth at home. There are also three sisters, Mrs. L. Cornell, Preston, Mrs. John Little of Guelph and Mrs. John Ohlman of Chicago. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon at Preston where Rev. Mr. Knauff, pastor of the Lutheran church, of which deceased was a member, conducted a simple and impressive service. Interment was made in the Preston cemetery. A large number of friends from various parts of the county, including members of the different township councils and county council, were present to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed. The pall-bearers wereex-Mayor Otto Homuth, ex-Mayor Henry Schultz, Peter Bernhardt, John Werlich, Jacob Mickler and JohnSohrt.

The first meeting to examine teachers in this county was held at Freeport in December, 1843. The commissioners present were Dr. Fulsom, James Phin, William Tilt, Jacob Lutz and a Church of England clergyman from Guelph who presided. The candidates for certificates were Amos Adams, Benjamin Burkholder, Nelson Newcombe, Elias Eby and one Lazarus who was then teaching in Berlin. Mr. Lazarus, after glancing around the room and making an estimate of the calibre of the Board, walked out remarking quite audibly that he was not going to be examined by a "set of farmers." The other four received their certificates, the first issued in the county, but Mr. Lazarus received none and had to resign his position in Berlin. For subsequent examinations teachers were obliged to go to Guelph, the then county town of the united counties of Wellington, Waterloo and Grey.

Death of Mr. William Tilt - This worthy gentleman, who had been ailing for some time from heart disease, passed quietly away in his rest on Wednesday evening, the 6th inst. There was not a getter known man in the township than the deceased, and he won the respect and admiration of all who came in contact with him, by his ? way and quiet, unassuming manner. By his family he was beloved; they clung to him, sought his counsels, and courted his approval to the last. Mr. Tilt was born in the town of Carpel, Surrey Co., England, on June 26, 1805. In 1832 he came to Canada. Before coming he taught school for some years in his native place. On his coming here he was engaged by Mr. Van Egmond, a Canada Land Co. agent, to accompany him to Huron Co., where he remained for three years, teaching Mr. Van Egmond's children and helping to lay out and survey the Huron road. - Leaving there in 1835 he came to Blair, where he taught for several years in a frame school that stood on the site of his late residence. Afterwards he was variously occupied til 1861 in running a tannery and in mercantile pursuits. In that year he was appointed clerk of the township of Waterloo, and held that post continuously till the 31st of March, 1883, when he resigned just four days before his death. The council, on accepting his resignation, donated him $500. He was twice married and his second wife survives him. He was the father of seventeen children, thirteen of whom are still living. At present there are fifty six of his grandchildren and fifteen of his great-grandchildren living.

OVER NINETY YEARS OF AGE

Death of Mrs. Wm. Tilt, Mother of Mrs J. Bechtel, Waterloo.

The death occurred at Blair on Friday evening at 8 o'clock of Mrs. Wm Tilt, mother of Mrs. J. Bechtel, Waterloo and Mr. Geo. A. Tilt, Blair, at the advanced age of 90 years. The aged lady had been confined to her bed for five weeks past, death being due to the infirmities of old age.

Mrs. Tilt, whose maiden name was Caroline Cosens, was borne in Hampshire, England, in 1817. The family emigrated to Canada in the spring of 1833, spending eight weeks on board of ship, which was an old warship called the "Lord Melville." The party came up the St. Lawrence river in rowboats as far as Prescott, where they took a steamer to Toronto, which was then a small town. They then hired a schooner to take them to Hamilton, and remained in the schooner over Sunday the party afterwards hired teams to bring them up the country to what is now known as German Mills.

Mr. Charles Cosens, father of Mrs. Tilt, purchased the farm north of Preston, now owned by Mr. C Green, where the family resided for a number of years.

In October of 1833 Mrs. Tilt left her home here to walk to where her married sister lived near Clinton. The first day she walked twenty miles, the next day twelve miles to Stratford, then called "Little Thames."

In 1834 she was married to the. late William Tilt, and in 1839 moved to Blair, then called "Carlisle," where she has resided ever since.

The funeral took place at Blair on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, services being held at the residence.

Hilborn House, H. Walder, Jr. proprietor, Stanley Street - The town of Ayr is happily well supplied with hotel accommodation; indeed, in this respect it will compare most favorably with the large cities of the Dominion. The finest hotel in Ayr is the Hilborn House, of which Mr. H. Walder, Jr., is the proprietor. It is most eligibly located, being right in the heart of the town; it is a substantial brick structure, and is equipped with all modern appliances and accommodations of a first-class hotel. It contains 27 bedrooms, fitted up in the most approved manner, three parlors, which are models of their kind; there are also two sample rooms, a smoking and reading room, and a bar which is always supplied with choice liquors and cigars. During the cold season of the year the house is comfortably heated throughout and the rooms are always well ventilated, and the house is provided with all modern conveniences. In connection with the hotel are boarding and livery stables, and there is also a bus for all trains. Mr. Walder, the proprietor, is late of Berlin, having recently acquired the Hilborn House. He is a competent and experienced hotel keeper, and understanding the wants of the public, is deserving of the large patronage he already enjoys.
