Scotts' Planing Mill, William & F.A. Scott, Mill Street - The above mentioned house is fully entitled to prominent mention in this work, for being one of the longest established and leading houses in Galt in the manufacture of sash, doors, blinds and builders' materials. The business was established 45 years ago by Mr. James Scott, father of the present proprietors. The plant of the house consists of lumber yards, 40x100 feet in dimensions, upon which is the mill proper, 40x80 feet in dimensions and two stories in height. The mill is provided with the very best of latest improved wood-working machinery and a steam engine of 30-horse power, as well as water supply, the motive power for the machinery; and employment is provided for 20 skilled operatives. The products of the house comprise all articles that properly come under the heading of wood-working machinery. The firm are also contractors and builders, and have erected many of the handsome dwellings which adorn the town, while their work is acknowledged to be of the very best and most complete in its every detail. The members of the firm, Messrs. Wm. and F.A. Scott, have conducted the business for the past 11 years, and have had many years practical experience in the trade. They are natives of Galt, and are industrious and progressive business men, thoroughly wide-awake and alive to all the requirements of their business, and are held in the highest esteem in the community.

    Business:
Nothing was more urgently needed at first than some means of grinding grain for food. This was temporarily supplied in an ingenious manner. We have already mentioned the existence of a dilapidated old building on Mill-creek, near the site of Scott's planing mill. Mr. Shade speedily converted the remains of this building, by the aid of the adjoining stream, into a rough and ready grist mill. Its product would hardly compare with the famous Princess Louise flour of the Stockwell mills; it boasted not of triple X or other fancy brands, and indulged not in packages with handsomely tinted labels; but the struggling settlers of those times greatly preferred it to the mixture which resulted from pounding wheat in a hole in a stump, or beating or rolling it by hand in some equally primitive manner. This mill without a name, in the absence of anything better, served the purpose un-til the project of erecting a proper flour mill was carried to completion about three years afterwards.
