    DEATH of MR. GEORGE CRAIGIE

Our Old Residents Are Rapidly Passing Away

At 9: 30 o'clock, Sunday night, one of the oldest and best-known residents of the town, passed away in the person of Mr George Craigie, Stone road. The deceased was a native of Scotland, having been born in Dundalk, Perthshire, 74 years ago. In 1852, accompanied by his wife and family, he removed to Canada, taking up his residence in Galt, where he continued to live until his death. One son and one daughter survive him, Mr. Alfred Craigie, Toronto and Miss J. Craigie, who kept house for her father. His wife died three years ago and of his brothers and sisters, none are living. The late Mr. Craigie was a stone mason by trade and nearly all the older stone buildings in Galt, including a number of the Main street stores, show evidence of his handicraft. He was one of those engaged in the erection of the Credit Valley branch of the C.P.R. and for some time was connected with the old Great Western Railway. During the many years he had lived here, he had even proven himself a man worthy of the respect and esteem of his fellow citizens and his death will be generally lamented. In his demise the C.P. church loses, a consistent and earnest member and one of its most steadfast adherents.

    Notes:

    Craigie, Elizabeth

There died in Galt on Sunday morning, at half past five o'clock, one of Galt's oldest and most respected residents, Elizabeth Cowan, wife of Mr. George Craigie, Crown St. The deceased was born in Traquair, Peeblesshire, Scotland, seventy-three years ago. She was married in Roxburghshire, near Jedborouh, forty nine years ago and about nine years afterwards, with her husband came to Canada, settling in Galt and has lived on the homestead all but one year since that time. The deceased leaves two children; Alfred, who lives in Toronto and is married and Christiana, who lives at home. She was a sister of Mr. Wm. Cowan, Pollock Avenue. There were three brothers and four sisters in her family, all of whom came to Canada, 40 years ago and Mrs. Craigie's death makes the first break in the family. The bereaved will have the deepest sympathy of their many friends.
