    EVANS, Gordon Wilbert

    Passed away on Widnesday, January 7th, 1987, at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital. Gordon Evans of 3 Kingsboro Rd. Cambridge, in his 68th year. Beloved husband of the late Eleanor Jean Hammersley and dear father of Richard of Cambridge; Megan (Mrs. George Molotkow) of Calgary. Dear brother of Katherine (Mrs. Horace Page) of Stroud; Verna (Mrs. Jack Little) and Mrs. Grace Hammersley both of Cambridge. Predeceased by a sister, Jean Moore. Mr. Evans was born in Galt, on February 26th, 1919, and has been a resident of Cambridge, all his life and was a veteran of W.W. II and served overseas with the Royal Canadian Regiment. Resting at Coutts and Son Funeral Home, 96 St. Andrews Street, where the family will receive friends on Friday, from 2-4 and 7-9. Funeral and Committal Services will be held from the Funeral Home Chapel, on Saturday, January 10th, at 1:30 p.m., with Rev. W. Bickford officiating. Interment at Mount View Cemetery.

    HAMMERSLEY, ROBERT NELSON

    At his residence, 27 Alexander Ave. in Galt, on Sunday, October 18, 1959, in his 78th year. Father of Thelma (Mrs. Harry Kelly) of Guelph; Jean (Mrs. Gordon Evans) of Galt; and Brooks Hammersley of Galt. Also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Jack Eltherington of Leamington and Mrs. J. B. Hunsperger of Vancouver. A resident of Galt for close to fifty years, he was born in Puslinch. He moved to Hespeler in his early teens, where he worked for a number of years, before locating in Galt. Employed by the textile firm of Staufer and Dobbie prior to his retirement five years ago, he had been foreman and in later years a loom fixer. He was a member of the 25 year club. He married Maud Brooks in Hespeler about fifty-five years ago. She predeceased him in June of this year. An ardent baseball and hockey fan, he played ball in his earlier years in Hespeler. Mr. Hammersley was an adherent of Wesley United Church in Galt. Funeral service at Little's Funeral Home, 39 Grant Ave. N. in Galt on Wed., Oct. 21 at 2. Interment Mount Hope Cemetery.

    HAMMERSLEY, ROBERT NIVEN

    One of the older residents of Hespeler, early Tuesday or Wednesday morning, June 28 or 29th 1927(differing reports), after an illness of several weeks. Born in Blenheim, Ontario, 82 years ago, he came to Puslinch Township with his parents, when he was but 4 years old. He resided there until some thirty- five years ago, when he moved into town. Several years ago, an accident disabled one leg and he had to go on crutches since. He has been ill several weeks. Survived by his wife and three daughters: Mrs. John Eltherington of Leamington; Mrs. Charles S. Garner of Brantford; Mrs. Maude Lothian, at home; one son, R. Nelson Hammersley of Galt; one sister, Mrs. Smith Evans of Puslinch; and three grandchildren. The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon at 2 from his residence on Queen St. to Hespeler Cemetery.

    Notes:

    Alex Murdoch came here from St. Marys about 1870 to learn the Blacksmithing trade with James P. Johnston and after his time was out he continued with Mr. Johnston until 1874. Afterwards, he started business on his own in the shop on Cooper Street and there remained until 1886 when he sold out to William Wingfield and went west.

    During at least the five years - 1882-1886 - his brother, Andrew, worked with him and in 1886 there was still another brother, John Murdoch, here who too was a blacksmith. A sister, Jane, worked for Randall Farr & Co. for three years prior to her marriage to Robert Hammersley on New Year's Day, 1874.

    HAMMERSLEY, JANE ANNIE (Nee Murdock)

    One of Hespeler's best known women, on Monday evening, August 12, 1935. Mrs. Robert Hammersley has been ill for about four months and her death was not unexpected. She was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1853, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alex Murdoch and came to Canada with her parents in 1855. The family settled near Kingston, living on several of the islands at the head of the St. Lawrence River. They moved to St. Mary's and later to Hespeler. In 1870, she married Robert Hammersley and for seventeen years, she and her husband farmed in Puslinch. Mrs. Hammersley was one of Hespeler's grand old ladies, known for the good deeds which she did. Her generosity was well known and she was highly respected. Her husband predeceased her some ten years ago. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Maud Lothian of Hespeler; Mrs. Charles Garner of Galt; Mrs. John Eltherington of Leamington; and one son, Nelson of Galt. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, with a private service in the home, followed by a service in St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member. Ernest Midgley contributed a solo. Pallbearers: Charles Gainer, John Eltherington, Nelson Hammersley, S. T. Organ, Harry Kelly and John Murdock.
