    "Funeral of a Soldier"

The funeral of the late Mr. William Webb took place on Saturday afternoon and was largely attended, many old friends and acquaintances being present, besides a number of members of the Salvation Army, with which the deceased had for several years been associated. an escort of sixteen men and four officers was furnished by the 29th Battalion, as a mark of respect from the local militia to the departed veteran. Although the day was intensely cold, overcoats were discarded and the men wore sidearms only. As the cortege was on its way to the cemetery, crowds of people thronged the streets; and many a sympathetic word was spoken in regret for the death of the kindly old gentleman whose face and stalwart figure had been so long and favorably known in public, and whose name has always been associated with the great victories of Alma and Inkerman. Rev. Mr. Kettlewell led in prayer at the house and officiated at the grave. Among the pallbearers were Mr. C. Bateman, and old member of the 60th Rifles, and Mr. John Boyd, who served 22 years in the 92nd Gordon Highlanders under General Roberts in the Afghan campaign in 1878, and a long list of other famous battles up to the time of the Boer War in 1881.
