    JOHN H. WESTFALL

John H. Westfall, 63, victim of accident on Monday Evening

A collision in which a car was crushed between two transport trucks at 6: 00 o'clock Monday evening at the main intersection of Petersburg, on Nos. 7 and 8 Highway resulted in the death of John Henry Westfall, 63, of Petersburg, driver of the car. The truck drivers were uninjured. Mr. Westfall is said to have driven his car, an old, light model, out onto the highway directly in the path of a W&G Hutton trailer transport driven by Hugh Munro, Uniondale, with a 10-ton load of grain in the trailer. The truck was driving west. The impact drove the car into a truck owned by E. Meyers, Shakespeare, which was parked at the side of the road about 100 feet from the intersection, and then thre both the car and the parked truck about 15 feet off the road. Mr. Meyer's was across the road at the time of the accident. The first transport landed on top of the car and smashed it into the ground.

Mr. Westfall was taken from the car in an unconscious condition and died an hour later at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital. The car was completely wrecked and extensive damage was done to the truck driven by Mr. Munro. The other vehicle was driven out of the field under its own power with only superficial damage. Mr. Munro said that he had no idea what had happened. He stated that he was driving along with a clear road in front of him until suddenly the small car appeared directly in his path. The next thing I knew," he said. "There was a crash and I found myself in the ditch on top of the car, with the other truck a few feet in front." William Kelly, St. Marys, who was in the truck with Munro, bore out that statement.

Mr. Westfall is survived by his wife, Anna,; one son, Emerson, Merryhill; one daughter, Mr. H Demmerling, Waterloo; and a step-daughter, Mrs. R. Mousso, St. Catharines. He was born in Woolwich township and moved to the Petersburg district eight years ago.

    WILLIAM WESTFALL

One of our well known citizens was removed by death on Monday evening in the person of Mr. William Westfall, who had reached the age of 77 years.

Mr. Westfall had been ailing for many months though he was not off work a great deal.

He was a hardworking industrious man making regular weekly trips to the Waterloo market, and preparing for this during the week.

He missed only three or four trips before death took him.

For the past eighteen years he was a respected citizen of our burg.

    Notes:

Catherine (Sauder) Westfall was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., July 30, 1859; died at her home in St. Jacobs, Ont., Oct. 23, 1940; aged 81 y. 2 m. 24 d.

To this union were born 10 children of whom 7 survive: Magdalena (Mrs. John Heer), John, Lucinda (Mrs. Simon Wilkie), Christina (Mrs. Norman Brubacher), Mary Ann (Mrs. Nelson Martin), Amanda and Katie.

She also leaves 25 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and 2 brothers (Henry and John Sauder of St. Jacobs, Ont.).

Early in the morning of July 6, 1940, she took sick with a heart condition and complications which later proved to be internal cancer.

She suffered much pain during her illness but bore it all patiently.

Her desire was to go home. She was much concerned about her soul, was constantly striving to prepare herself, and the bright testimony she left gives us the assurance that she was ready to go.

The last clear words she said were "Vas Gott tuht das ist wohl getan".

She is very much missed, but what is the earthly loss is her gain.

Her favourite chapters were John 11 and 14 and she often asked us to read them.

She was a member of the Old Order Mennonites till her death.

The services at the home and meeting house were conducted by Daniel Brubacher, Daniel Martin, and Abraham Bearinger.

MR. M. B. OSWALD JOINS THE MAJORITY

    PASSED AWAY ON SUNDAY LAS
    T

There passed from life unto death, on Sunday, Nov. 13, a respected resident in the person of Mr. Michael B. Oswald. He was one of the pioneers of Woolwich and had reached the ripe old age of 89 years, 2 months and 10 days.

Mr. Oswald was born in Germany in the year 1832, in Wilgartsweisen, Rhine Phalz, Bavaria. He came to Canada when a youth of 15 years. His parents took up land in Woolwich Township. Mr. Oswald spent 66 years of his long life on the farm.

On December 22, 1856, he married Miss Philippine Braun and their union was blessed with twelve children, only four of whom are living. Mrs. Oswald died 7 years ago.

The surviving children are: Mr. Jacob Oswald and Mrs. Albert Lorch, of Elmira, Mrs. Henry Ott, of Listowel and Mrs. Henry Beckner on the old homestead.

A brother, Mr. Jacob Oswald, of Kitchener, survive him as do also 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Mr. Oswald was an industrious and intelligent man. He succeeded as a farmer and took a strong interest in every thing that would promote progress. He is credited with having been one of the founders of the Elmira and Woolwich Agricultural Society, was for many years a director and when age overtook him he was, in recognition of his services, made an Honorary President.

He had lived for sixteen years in Elmira and was a lifelong member of St. James' Lutheran Church.

His funeral was on Tuesday afternoon held and was largely attended by sorrowing friends. The funeral procession left the home of his son-in-law Mr. Henry Beckner, at 2 o'clock and proceeded to St. James' Church for services, with Rev. John Strempfer officiating; after which interment took place in the St. James' Church Cemetery.
Among those from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. Jacob Oswald, Mr. Henry and Mr. Wm. Oswald, of Kitchener, Mr. Michael Braun of Neustadt, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wells and Mrs. Gerbracht, of Ayton.

There were presented a number of floral offerings by relatives and friends, including a pillow from the children.

A good, useful life has closed and his death has called forth for the members of his family the sympathy of the community.
