    Samuel Wesley Rowe

    Samuel Wesley Rowe, a well-known resident of Galt for 32 years, died yesterday at his home at 90 Shade street, following a long illness. Born near Exeter, he operated a furniture and funeral service for some time and for a number of years was associated with Allan [sic] and Ray at Galt. He was a member of Wesley United church, and a member of the I. O. O. F. at Exeter. Surviving are his wife, Alma Wiggins Key [missing portion], daughters, Mrs. Fred [missing] (Viola) of Long Branch. [missing], Donald Halliday, (Florence). [missing] A step-daughter, Miss D. [missing] lives at Flint, Mich., another daughter [?], Mrs. Roy Windsor, [missing] City, Mich. Two brother [missing] and Harry, reside at Exeter [missing] will be received at the [missing] and Son Funeral Home [missing] service will be conducted [missing] there on Wednesday at 8:30 [missing] and interment will be in [missing] cemetery, Thursday.

    In 1874, this corner was the original location of the Molson's Bank. The stately house was later incorporated into the R.N. Rowe funeral home and furniture business when Mr. Rowe became its owner in 1887. Mr. Rowe's grandson, R. C. Dinney took over the business in the 1940s and where his son operated Exeter Home Furniture until 2014.

    After finding that Rowe was buried in Exeter, I e-mailed the Haskett Funeral Home there to get his death date. The reply was that the funeral home was started by the Rowes, but Hasketts don't have the early records. The person who replied suggested that I call Ada Dinney, a descendant of Samuel Rowe's brother. I called Ada on July 28, 2014, and she told me that Samuel and his brother Robert Rowe did establish a funeral home in Exeter in 1887. Samuel left about a year later to work in or own a grocery store in Farquar, Ontario [also in Huron County]. Ada thought that he went to Galt or Guelph after that.
