George Elvin, Greenfield Road, Dies Following Accident

The death occurred at his home on the Greenfield road, three miles northeast of Ayr, late Thursday afternoon, following an accident, of Frederick George Elvin, aged 74 years. Mr. Elvin was backing his team to hitch them to the binder when one of the horses caught its foot in a groundhog hole and fell, giving him a severe jolt and knocking him to the ground. The shock, along with a heart condition from which, he had been suffering, proved too much for Mr. Elvin and his death resulted in the course of some 30 minutes. Born in England, Mr. Elvin came to Canada, alone, at the age of 11. Upon reaching this country, he was employed as a farm hand north of Kingston. He later moved to Hamilton, where he was married in 1887. Shortly after his marriage, he moved to a farm in Puslinch Township. While living there, Mr. Elvin occupied the position of town foreman at Galt for 18 years. Surviving him are four sons and four daughters: William J., who resides on a neighboring farm; Robert, Reidsville; Morley G., Galt; Frederick G., Guelph; Mrs. Wm. McConnell, Galt; Mrs. George Ashton, Galt; Mrs. Stewart McConnell, Galt, and Miss Annadale at home. One brother in the United States and 12 grandchildren also survive. The funeral took place Saturday to Mount View Cemetery, Galt, with Rev. J. J. Lowe of Central Presbyterian Church conducting the services. The pallbearers were: James R. Henderson James M. DICKIESON, ALEXANDER

We regret to learn of the death, quite suddenly, of Mr. Dickieson of North Dumfries, close to the Puslinch Townline. He had not been very well for some months but he and his friends thought his illness was not of a serious nature. On Tuesday morning, January 18, 1887, he arose and took some breakfast but shortly after grew faint and passed away. The cause of death is supposed to have been from weakness of the heart or apoplexy. Mr. Dickieson was a very worthy, quiet man. He carried on farming extensively in Eramosa for some years, moving to North Dumfries about five years ago. He leaves a widow and quite a large family.

-Information from the death certificate: Born in Scotland. Aged 65 years.
