    Notes:

    Death of Mrs. McTague

We mentioned in our last issue that this venerable lady was lying at the point of death at the residence of her son-in-law at Seaforth and on Friday calmly passed to her long rest. We are indebted to the Guelph Herald for the following obituary notice of the deceased lady: -

"Another pioneer has passed away. Mrs. Chas. McTague, one of the earliest settlers in Guelph breathed her last in Seaforth on Friday. Of that study little baud of pioneers who in 1827 took up their habitation in the trackless forest where our city now stands, few indeed remain, and not many years will elapse when none will be left to tell the story of the early history of Guelph. The subject of this notice was probably the most widely known of the first pioneers. She was born in the County of Derry, Ireland, in 1786, and thus at the time of her death had almost attained her 100th year. With her late husband and other members of the family she emigrated to this country in 1827, and took up her residence in what was destined to be the future city of Guelph. For many years the husband of the deceased conducted an hotel on Gordon street. The building has long since fallen into decay, and the vacant lot opposite the Royal Organ factory is the only remaining landmark of the first tavern in Guelph. The early lite of deceased in this country was not one of ease. She experienced in no small degree the trials and hardships which fell to the lot of the pioneer, and her remarkable energy and industry are still remembered by those who lived here at that time. After keeping hotel for many years Mr. McTague retired into private life. In 1852 he died, leaving his faithful partner to face the difficulties and tribulations of life alone. About twenty years ago Mrs. McTague removed to St. Catharines, but she only lived there a short time when she returned to Guelph again. In '72 she went to Seaforth to reside with her son-in-law Mr. James Murphy, and since then has been a member of his household. Of late years the old lady has had several attacks of illness each one of which was expected to prove fatal. Up to within a short time of her dissolution she was in full possession of her faculties and enjoyed life as thoroughly as if she had not yet passed the allotted span. Her death will cause much sorrow among the old residents of this vicinity, for she was a woman possessing noble traits of character and during her long earthly career made few enemies and a great many friends. Out of a family of eight children only three survive, viz.: Mr. James McTague, of Galt, Mrs. Murphy, of Seaforth, and Mrs. Tobin, of this city. She also leaves behind her a large number of grandchildren.
