    Notes:

    Henry S. Böhmer

In recent days, death reaped a wealthy harvest in Berlin and area. At noon Saturday, Henry S. Balmer, one of the most prominent citizens of our town passed away. He was born in 1836 on a farm near Berlin, and came to Berlin 36 years ago. He ran a store on the spot where Beck and Schell's shop now stands, and from whose beginnings, gradually, the present Böhmer Company developed. The deceased, in addition, belonged to several other industrial organizations, was active in the expansion of Berlin and had, on his own, approximately 50 residences and other buildings constructed here. He was on city council for two years. His first wife was Anna Oberholtzer, who passed away about 14 years ago. Several years ago, he married Mrs. Margaretha Guth of Milwaukee, Wisc., who survives him, as well as five children from the first marriage, as well as five brothers and one sister. The burial was to have taken place on Tuesday afternoon, after a service in the German Baptist Church, but had to be postponed, because several relatives only reached Berlin late in the evening, because of the snow-fall.

    Henry S. Boehmer and Associates

Henry S. Boehmer, merchant, began business at 16 East King Street, in a store 16 x 20 feet, in 1868. He and his brothers Charles and Philip erected the Dunke block, and in association with them and his brothers August and Herman, the block at 58-62 East King Street. At various times, his four brothers and P. S. Lautenschlager were partners of the store enterprise; and later on, E. D. Lang, Julius Appel, and his sons, A. O. and E. O. Boehmer. The firm dealt in dry-goods and became one of the chief mercantile houses in the county. Mr. H. S. Boehmer broke ground in Alma Street and built six houses in it. Elsewhere in the town he erected upward of fifty homes. At the time of his death he was President of the Dominion Table Company, and a director of the Berlin Piano Company and J. Y. Shantz & Sons. On his deathbed he was told of the Wellesley Railway by-law, just voted on, having lacked three votes of the necessary majority. "What a pity," said he, "I have three votes that would have carried it."

    THE WINDMILL

A feature of many years of the southerly end of the village was a windmill, on what was known as Mecklenburg Hill, near the westerly corner of Church and Albert streets. This was the project of a company composed of Jacob Y. Shantz, Henry Boehmer and others. It was built in 1860 by Frederick Rickerman who was the originator of the idea. Rickerman was familiar with windmills and had operated one in Germany. The structure was about sixty feet high, hexagonal in plan, with each of the four wings or sails about 45 feet long by 6 feet wide. A vertical centre beam meshing with the topcross shaft extended down to the main floor of the mill and there operated three sets of stones. The revolving top carried the cross-shaft, on which the wings were mounted, and could be set for the Wind by means of a Windlass. An outer platform was at the height of' the wing length from the top shaft. From this the wings or arms could be worked on, and their canvas covering put in place. Particular excellence was claimed for the flour from this mill. The author remembers eating bread baked from the first flour it produced.
