Dr. Charles T. Noecker Dies Suddenly At Waterloo

Medical Health Officer and Public School Chairman For Many Years

    Medical Referee of Dominion Life

Death came suddenly about 9.30 Friday morning to one of Waterloo county's most prominent doctors in the person of Dr. Charles T. Noecker, dean of Twin City medical practitioners. He was quite cheerful and chatted with members of his family a short time before his passing. He had been ill since April 27th when he suffered a heart attack, and was confined to his home since that time. Since 1888 Dr. Noecker has been prominent in the medical, civic and educational life of the community. He completed 50 years of service this year as medical director of the Dominion Life Assurance Company. For twenty years he was medical officer of health, and for 43 years a member of the Waterloo Public School Board. He had an enviable record of 52 years as a practicing physician and was the first specialist in this district, his services being sought by people throughout the county. After a year in post-graduate work abroad, Dr. Noecker in 1887 started his practice in Waterloo. In 1889 he became medical director of the Dominion Life and held this responsible position until his death, and actively until April. He conducted his private practice along with his duties at the Dominion Life for over 40 years.

    Medical Health Officer

He was the first permanent medical health officer for Waterloo. It was the practice in earlier days for the office to be passed around to a different doctor each year and Dr. Noecker took his turn at various times before the appointment was made permanent. He succeeded to the office as a permanent official upon the death of Dr. A. F. Bauman in 1918. He retired as M.O.H. in December last year. Together with the late Dr. J. F. Honsberger of Kitchener, Dr. Noecker had been honored by the North Waterloo Medical Association in 1936. Each at that time had completed 50 years of service

    An Educationist

Dr. Noecker had a fine record as an educationist, serving for 43 years on the Waterloo Public School Board, receiving his appointment to the board in 1889, and continued until his retirement in 1930. Dr. Noecker received his early education at Central public school and Berlin high school. He attended Toronto School of Medicine for four years and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1886, at the age of 21 years. He spent a year abroad in Vienna, Austria, and upon his return opened his practice in Waterloo

    Specialized in Surgery

Dr. Noecker was an eye, ear and nose specialist, but practiced in all departments of medical surgery. His first surgical work was an eye operation which was successfully performed. Surviving are one son, Claude, Waterloo town engineer, one daughter, Eloise E., of Waterloo, one brother, L. Alvin of Vancouver, and one sister, Mrs. Minnie Fenton of Elmira. His wife, Roxanna Edmunds, predeceased him in April, 1938. Scores of friends, relatives and associates in business and professional life attended the funeral services held on Monday afternoon at 3.30 o'clock from the residence. Rev. E. Val. Tilton officiated and paid tribute to the sterling character and fine citizenship of the deceased. Entombment was made in the Mausoleum at Kitchener. In honor of his memory the flags on the Dominion Life and Waterloo Town Hall hung at half-mast. The town hall was tolled during funeral service. The Dominion Life closed during the funeral service. The bearers were: P. H. Roos, A. B. Learn, H. G. Mistele, H. G. McCabe, A. N. McTavish and Robt. Fleischauer. At the home the drawing room and casket were banked with beautiful floral tributes sent by the various organizations with which deceased was associated, and friends. Among those who attended the funeral were officers and directors of the Dominion Life, Moe Leiter and Frank Simpson of the Detroit branch, Isaac McNabb and J. L. Scott of the Toronto branch.

    Notes:

Karl (Charles) Noecker was born in the state of Prussia in Germany. After he had served in the cavalry in the Prussian army, he decided in 1852 to come out to Canada. He chose Berlin because of the use of German language and was able to get a job in George Davidson's store. In 1854 he went back to Germany and brought over his whole family who settled around the community of Glen Allen. But not Charles. He returned this time to Waterloo. As things worked out later, he found a job helping run the Traveller's House, a hotel that had been established by Eckhardt Kalbfleisch. It appears that Kalbfleisch was in failing health and he died in 1862. After a year or two Charles married the Widow Kalbfleisch. As Noecker took over the business in 1864 he decided to give his place a fancy name \endash Gambrius Hotel, but the name didn't appeal to the local citizens and they just called it Noecker's Place. Charles built a large home for his family on the corner of King St N and what was later Noecker St which he called Karlsrest.
