    Notes:

    The pioneer of this village [St. Clements] was Adolph Schittler. He was followed soon after by John Stroh, who opened a tavern where Mr. Burbach now resides. In this tavern Mr. Stroh also kept a post office. A store was afterwards opened by Borres & Glyck. The second store was opened by Herbert Gillis. In 1844 Ambrose Starr arrived in what then was considered a promising village. He was a leader among men and wielded a powerful influence in shaping the destinies of the village.
