    Notes:

    Edward Ward.

There are but few young farmers in Waterloo county who are doing as much towards giving farming the reputation of being foremost among the Occupations of mankind as the gentleman above named. Mr. Ward owns a farm of one hundred acres, which is located conveniently near the villages of Crosshill and Linwood. The farm is well improved and is in a high state of cultivation. A large addition to his barn is a conspicuous and very recent improvement. The lower portion of this new addition has been converted into four or five large pig sties, and most conveniently arranged for feeding, etc. As to comfortable quarters for his porkers, I must say that he takes the lead in anything of the kind I have yet inspected. Excepting the front, it is enclosed by a heavy stone wall and is well lighted and arranged for proper ventilation. At the time of my visit the pens contained thirty-five or forty fine hogs, some about ready for the market and in the various stages of growth. Each lot was separated according to size and condition. That clean and others warm quarters well bedded enhances the growth and fattening process there is plain evidence here.

Mr. Ward is also quite a successful horse fancier and has now in his stables some superb animals. He has also Occasionally been a successful competitor for first premiums on horse flesh at our county fairs. His horses are kept in fine condition, for which purpose he annnally produces from a thousand to fifteen hundred bushels of oats, in addition to a large quantity of other grain. As a ploughman Mr. Ward has

become somewhat noted at the annual ploughing matches and at the recent contest at St Clements carried off the first prize.

Mr. Ward is also possessed of a pleasant home, a kind, industrious and intelligent wife and four interesting children. Both Mr. and Mrs. Ward are members of the Presbyterian church of Crosshill, and of which he is Secretary and Treasurer.

    Notes:

Linwood was never even an official village ... so "Town Hall?" As in many smaller communities across the province, that phrase had nothing to do with civic governance. In Waterloo County of yore, Galt, Preston, Berlin, Waterloo and a few others had actual town halls that housed mayors, reeves, councillors, civic staff, perhaps the fire and police departments. Linwood's Town Hall had a different use and history.

The building now housing Schnurr's Grocery was opened in 1911 but the family business goes back even further to John Schnurr's original log shoemaking shop of 1858. A building erected 15 years later allowed John to expand into feed, flour and groceries. Sons Aaron (a.k.a. Orrin) and Albert assisted, taking over at the turn of the century. In 1910 they purchased a new brick building that still houses the Schnurr family business ...

    John Schnurr

In the peaceful passing away on Friday afternoon, April 23, of John Schnurr of Linwood, in his 98th year, Waterloo County has lost one of its oldest residents, and Wellesley Township, one of its earliest and most esteemed pioneers.

Born in Wurtemburg, Germany, on December 28, 1828, the late Mr. Schnurr sailed for Canada in 1854, his earliest years being spent in Hawkesville which was then one of the oldest and most thriving centres in Waterloo County.

In 1858 he moved to Linwood, where he entered business as one of the pioneers of this new centre in the then famous woodland area" of Queen's Bush." Here he lived and labored for nearly 70 years, building up a prosperous business, favorably known for miles around.

Genial in nature, and upright in character, he unassumingly exerted a wholesome influence upon the community, with which he was so long a familiar personality, easily winning and retaining warm and lasting friendships.

On May 25, 1858, Mr. Schnurr was married to Anna Margretta Eberwein, who predeceased him . some 15 years ago. Of the nine children which blessed their union, three died in infancy, while more recently death claimed a son, Albert, and a daughter, Mrs. M. Goetz. The four surviving members of the family are: John of Mildmay, Mrs. E. Ward of Crosshill, Aaron, successor in his father's business in Linwood, and Miss Mellie at home.

The funeral service was held from his late residence at one p.m., on Monday, April 26, interment being made in Linwood Union Cemetery in the presence of many sympathetic friends and neighbors of the bereaved and sorrowing family.
