SCHMIEDER, Rev. Henry H.

Of Route 1, Renfrew. Ont., pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, Eganville Ont. and St. James Lutheran Church, Renfrew, died after a brief illness, at Ottawa General Hospital on Tuesday, December 21, 1976. Born on February 15, 1919 in Kitchener, he was the son of the late Dr. John Schmieder and his wife Margaret (nee Poser). He graduated from Waterloo College, in 1941 and Waterloo Lutheran Seminary, in 1944. Was called to St. James Lutheran Church, New Dundee and St. James Lutheran Church, Mannheim. Since 1949 he has been pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, Eganville and in 1975 was called also to serve, St. James Lutheran Church, Renfrew. Pastor Schmieder was a member of the board of governors of the former Waterloo Lutheran University and Waterloo Lutheran Seminary for an extensive period of time, including the period of provincialization of the University, when it became Wilfrid Laurier University. He also served as protestant chaplin, CFB Foymount, for many years. During the development of Camp Lutherlyn at Golden Lake, Ont., Pastor Schmieder provided much of the impetus in leadership. He is survived by his wife, Jean (nee Kramp), whom he married in Kitchener, in 1945; by a son, John Schmieder of Renfrew; two daughters, Margaret Schmieder and Mary Schmieder of Toronto and by a sister, Ruthmarie (Mrs. Carl J. Weber) of Kitchener. The body will lie in state at Grace Lutheran Church, Eganville where funeral service will be held on Friday, December 24.

Our heavenly Father has called into his presence Pastor John Schmieder, a veteran of the Cross of the Eastern Canada Synod. The Rev. John Schmieder, D.D., of 722 Westmount Road, Kitchener, Pastor Emeritus of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Kitchener, died suddenly at his summer home at Papineau Lake in Hastings County, Ontario, on Tuesday morning, September 2, 1975. Born on October 11, 1890 in Edenwald, Assinaboia (Saskatchewan), he was the second of five sons born to Henry Coelestin Schmieder and his wife, Nee Koermann. The family moved to San Diego, California in 1896, thence to Lyons, N.Y. in 1900. In 1902 he entered the preparatory school of Northwestern College, Watertown, Wisconsin, to graduate with his B.A. in 1908. His education continued for the winter semester in Kropp (Schleswig Holstein) Seminary and the summer semester of 1909 at the University of Halle, Germany. The next two years at the Philadelphia Seminary led to ordination at the hand of the Ministerium of Pennsylvania on June 11, 1911, when he was not yet 21 years of age. Subsequent to his first pastorate at St. John's Church, Shenandoah, Pa., 1911-1915, he matriculated at the University of Berlin in 1915 and Marburg University, Germany, in 1916, then served as pastor of Trinity Church, Philadelphia, Pa., from 1916 to 1918, when he was called to St. Matthew's Church, Kitchener. From 1918 to the present he has served as pastor and pastor emeritus of St. Matthew's. During this long and distinguished ministry there were recorded in the church records: 3,745 baptisms; 3,374 confirmations; 1,925 weddings and 1,681 funerals. Serving the wider interests of his church, Rev. Schmieder was a member of the Board of Governors of Waterloo College and Seminary for 19 years and Chairman of the Board for 10 years. In recognition of his work the University of Western Ontario conferred on him the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity. For 12 years he was a member of the Board of American Missions of the U.L.C.A., and he served also as a member of the Board of Adjudication of the same body. He was appointed one of the two Canadian delegates to the Constituting Assembly of the Lutheran World Federation in Lund, Sweden, and a Commissioner to the Canadian Lutheran Council. For over 30 years he was a member of the K-W Rotary Club. On April 30, 1918, Rev. Schmieder was married in Philadelphia to Margaret Poser, who predeceased him on November 7, 1962. Two children were born to them, Henry Herman, pastor of Grace Church, Eganville; and Ruthmarie, wife of Carl J. Weber, of Kitchener. On December 27, 1963, Dr. Schmieder was married to Marianne Binhammer. Those who survive, together with his wife and children, are: a brother, Fred of Daytona Beach, Florida; eight grandchildren - Margaret, Mary and John Gordon Schmieder; John, Mark, James, Barbara and Paul Weber; and four stepsons - Mr. Gerry Binhammer of Pembroke, Dr. Helmut Binhammer of Kingston, Dr. Harold Binhammer of Kingston, and Rev. Robert Binhammer of Toronto.

DR. JOHN SCHMIEDER

Dr. John Schmieder dies; pastor 41 yrs.

Rev. Dr. John Schmieder, pastor of Kitchener's St. Matthew's Lutheran Church for 41 years, died today at his summer home at Papineau Lake, northeast of Bancroft.

He was 84.

The sixth in a direct line of ministers, Dr. Schmieder served St. Matthew's from 1918 until his retirement from the active ministry in 1959.

He has been pastor emeritus of the congregation for 17 years.

A native of Saskatchewan, Dr. Schmieder was educated in Canada, the United States and Germany.

He came to Kitchener after a brief pastorate in Philadelphia.

It is estimated he performed more than 12,000 pastoral acts during his ministry at St. Matthew's.

Dr. Schmieder, fluent in both German and English, began the radio ministry at St. Matthew's that is now in its 35^th year.

The program, now known as Golden Hours, was originally in German under the title Kirsche Daheim

(Church at Home).

He served 19 years on the board of governors of Waterloo College and Waterloo Lutheran seminary, first as secretary and 10 years as chairman of the board.

He was one of two Canadian delegates to the constitutional convention of the Lutheran World Federation in Lund, Sweden.

Dr. Schmieder is survived by his wife, Marianne, a daughter Ruthmarie (Mrs. Carl Weber) of Kitchener and a son, Rev. Henry Schmieder of renfrew.

Dr. Schmieder's first wife Margaret, died in 1962.

No funeral arrangements have been made.

On May 1st, 1877, he was married to Charlotte, daughter of Samuel and Catharine (Overult) Bricker. She was born August 15th, 1847. After their marriage they took possession of his father's beautiful farm near Berlin where they resided until his death which took place March 16th, 1892. Some time after his death his widow left the farm and moved to Berlin where she still resides. Their family consists of two children".

SUDDEN DEATH

Mr. Joseph C Bowers, died suddenly on Wednesday at his residence near Berlin. He was in Berlin that day lively and cheerful. On arriving at home he sat down to supper, taking a hearty meal. While at the table ordinary conversation was engaged in and there was not the slightest indication that anything was the matter. He took a drink of tea from his cup and then sank down in his chair, dying instantly. Deceased was 46 years old, and one of the best informed and most advanced farmers in the country. He leaves a wife and two children to mourn his loss and who have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement.
