    _____________

HAGMEIER, JOHN EDWIN was born near Hespeler on August 14, 1884, a son of Abraham Hagmeier. He was educated locally, and at Galt Collegiate before entering the medical faculty of the University of Toronto, he graduated in 1911, and after postgraduate study in Europe and hew York, together with his brother Gordon, opened an office in 1914 in Berlin at the corner of Frederick and Ahrens streets.

Although his chief interest was in internal medicine, he assisted his brother at operations, usually by acting as anaesthetist. During this period their practice extended to a considerable radius including areas as far afield as Tobermoray.

In 1925 they moved to Preston, opening the Preston Springs Hotel as a health spa. They had a thriving practice until 1942 when the building was taken over by the military.

Dr. Edwin returned to Kitchener to practice, with an office on King Street, where he stayed until the office was destroyed by fire in 1960. He then moved back to Frederick Street, and at the age of 75 years, insisted on a ten year lease.

An ardent fisherman, he travelled widely in pursuit of this sport, being noted for his ability to move rapidly over the roughest terrain.

In 1969 he retired, but kept an interest in medical affairs. He remained mentally unimpaired, and continued to be active physically within the limits imposed by his health, which gradually deteriorated.

He died on October 2, 1982, aged 98, and survived by a son and daughter, and by his brother Dr. Gordon.

(He was the subject of two oral history interviews, the tapes being: held by the Waterloo Historical Society.)
