D r Hartley Henderson, one of the oldest practising physicians in Kitchener before he retired two years ago, died at Huntsville Memorial Hospital on Tuesday. He was 76.

For 40 years he ran his family practice out of his Queen Street North home in Kitchener. He believed strongly in preventive medicine and was one of the few doctors who still made house calls.

He retired reluctantly in 1994, saying he would miss the relationships he had developed over the years.

The strength of those relationships was evident at a surprise retirement party held in his honor and attended by more than 300 patients, colleagues and family members.

Henderson was born in Guelph and moved to Kitchener when he was two. He graduated from Kitchener Collegiate Institute in 1938.

After serving in the army for six years, he attended McGill University medical school, graduating in 1952.

Following his retirement he moved to his home on Peninsula Lake in Huntsville, where he enjoyed skiing. hunting and fishing.

Henderson is survived by his wife Irma, to whom he was married for 48 years, and their children, Frances and Michael of Kitchener and Brian of Canmore, Alta, and their families.

Officer Informs Sweetheart of His Enlistment After His First Offer Is Refused and She Goes to Canada to Marry Him.

The marriage of Miss Mary Hill, 21 years old, of Sprague avenue, Bellevue, a teacher in the Bellevue public schools. to Captain Roy Hartley Henderson of Toronto, Can., serving in the English army, was solemnized in Toronto last Tuesday, Miss Hill's friends were told yesterday.

The wedding was the culmination of a love affair which started three years ago while Miss Hill was spending a vacation in Canada, where she met Henderson. then attending a university. After Miss Hill's return home the two corresponded. Last Christmas Henderson came to Bellevue, and, according to Miss Hill's intimates, asked her to become his wife. The answer, according to reports, was a negative one.

Returning to Toronto, Henderson joined the Canadian expeditionary force and soon attained the rank of captain.

Last week Miss Hill received a letter from Captain Henderson, explaining that he had joined the English army and again asking her to be his wife. She left for Toronto last Monday, telling no one of her plans. Thursday afternoon her soldier husband departed for France. Mrs. Henderson returned to Bellevue. She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hill.
