HAWKESVILLE MAN MISSING; BELIEVED LOST LIFE IN RIVER

Albert Ludwig, Aged 25, not Seen Since Monday Morning; Last Seen in Row Boat.

Albert Ludwig, aged 25 years missing from his home in Hawkesville since early Monday morning is believed to have been drowned in the Conestogo river. After leaving his home shortly after seven o'clock Monday morning to visit his traps across the Conestogo river he was last seen in a row boat. After he had been gone for some time an alarm was raised as it was feared he had lost his life. Searching parties walked several miles along the river but withou: result. The rising water and strong current leads people to the opinion that his boat was upset.

Albert Ludwig of Kitchener is the father of the missing man and turnkey Ludwig at the county jail is a cousin.

REMAINS OF LATE BERT LUDWIG FOUND NEAR ST. JACOBS

On Saturday Menno Horst of St. Jacobs found the remains of the late Bert Ludwig, who was drowned in November when his boat went over the Hawkesville dam. Mr. Horst was fishing about a mile and a half below St. Jacobs in the Conestogo river when he made the discovery of the body. The body was found in a mangled condition and was decomposed, identification being made from the clothes and the fact that both boots were missing. Mr. Horst sent for a physician and the under- taker, Mr. Dreisinger, of Elmira, shortly after he found the body.

The late Mr. Ludwig was a son of Mr. Albert Ludwig of Kitchener and on the day of his death attended the celebration of the 80th birthday of his grandfather, Mr. A. Ludwig of Hawkesville.

    THE HYDROPHOBIA CURE

LETTER FROM MR. EMERY, OF WILMOT

A few weeks ago, when the details of the horrible death of a man in Dundas fresh is the minds of the community, wrote to Mr. John Emery, of Wilmot, who has for years been in possession of a cure for Hydrophobia, asking him to furnish us with such particulars of his experience in the treatment of the disease as he might be disposed to give, and also pressing upon him the necessity of placing such a valuable remedy within the reach of the public generally. The remedy is known to himself alone, and has been the means of saving human life in a great number, and besides has proved effectual in curing farm stock to the value of thousands of dollars which has boon afflicted with this terrible disease. The name of John Emery is known in connection with this cure throughout all this section of the country, and he cites instances from Goderich, London, Toronto, Hamilton, Long Point, and other places, in which his treatment has proved successful in counteracting the effects of the virus, which had been communicated by rabid animals. We give an extract from his letter which speaks itself. Mr. Emery says :- " There have been endeavours made by many persons to obtain the cure from me, but until now I have refused to sell the receipt to any person. However, I feel at liberty to dispose of it, and if I receive a sufficient remuneration from a respectable person will make the cure known * * * As you wished me to give some instances where persons had procured medicine from me for the bits of a mad dog, or other rabid animals, I would refer you to Mr. John Grummett of Beverly He had nearly all his stock bitten, I gave him medicine for and ox only. All the other animals bitten went mad. Also to Mr. Isaac Clemens, M. P. for South Waterloo, bitten by mad dog. A. J. Peterson, Registrar County Waterloo, bitten by his own dog, which was raving mad beyond a doubt; James Dunam, of Dundas; Jacob Aument, of Queen's Bush, who had a piece bitten out of his nose by a mad wolf. In 1860, Mr. Wm. Noon, of Beverly, got medicine from me for himself and son, had been bitten by mad dog. In 1862, two children sons of Mr. Trow, M. P., Co. Perth, were bitten, and Mrs. Trow had also been bitten 15 years before when a girl, all use used my medicine and were saved. In looking back to 1846 I find two cases - one a child of Ladwick Adit, Wilmot, four years old and a son of Joseph Loetsinger, of North East Hope, 15 years old. These children were literally chawed up, one of them had thirteen holes in the hand and arm and a long cut on the head. In all cases the medicine proved effectual. I shall not write any more at present, but subscribe myself,

    Yours respectfully[sic], JOHN EMERY.

In addition to these cases, we know of several instances in Galt and vicinity where the medicine has been used. In Beverly, Mr. Charles McKilligan informs of one case of a mare which had been bitten by a horse which was raving mad and had to be shot. The mare was covered with wounds, medicine had not only to be given internally, but rubbed into the sores. Mr. Emery was so confident that his medicine would effectual that he agreed to be responsible of the stock on the farm, over one thousand dollars worth, and allow the bitten animal run among them only stipulating that the medicine would be given faithfully. The result proved that his confidence was not misplaced, as the mare recovered. This alone is testimony that the remedy is a radical cure, and worthy of attention.

We have corresponded with Mr. Emery for the purpose of inducing him to place the medicine within reach of the public throughout the country, but instead of adopting this new method he now offers to sell the receipt for a consideration. We believe this is the first time has expressed a willingness to dispose of his secret, and in the interests of humanity we think the opportunity should be taken advantage of either by private enterprise or by the action of the Local Government Mr. Emery's address is Baden P. Notes:

DEATH IN A PIT: TWO MEN BURIED ALIVE AND SMOTHERED TO DEATH - HEARTBREAKING SCENE.

At about a quarter to twelve o'clock this (Monday) fore-noon, a report came to town that Carl Fromm and his son Henry had been buried twenty feet underground. As a matter of course there was a rush of the people of the Town to the place of the accident - about a quarter of a mile behind the Grand Trunk Station. It took over two hours of hard work before the men were got out and both were dead. Perhaps the best way to describe the sad event is to take the information received from George Helm, a young man who was helping. Mr. Fromm, Senior, was the owner of a piece of ground, near the Waterloo Branch of the Railway on which is a marsh covering about half an acre - he conceived the idea of draining this piece of waste land by digging through an embankment about 100 feet across, at the middle of which the depth would be about 25 feet, and sloping at both ends. The greater part of the work was done, as they finished it in sections, by putting in a wooden tile and then covering it up. They got more than half through when the accident happened. This morning they engaged young Helm to help them, and at the time of the accident he was right between the other two. The ditch was boarded up at the sides, but that did not seem to be sufficient. They all saw that it was dangerous to stay any longer, and decided to get out and put in another piece of tile. But just that instant the side caved in. They all three jumped and struggled to keep above the falling sand, but Helm was the only one that succeeded. He happened to catch hold of a plank and thus helped himself somewhat. He was covered right up to the shoulders, but worked himself out. The others were covered entirely. As soon as Helm got out he called for help, which a man nearby heard. He commenced to dig the others out, and succeeded in uncovering both of them down below the shoulders. Henry kept shrieking "for God's sake help me out!" But they were so fastened in that they could not get out, when another fall of earth took place and they were again totally covered up. He was then exhausted and could do no more, but other help arrived, and with great exertions on the part of many of our citizens, they were again reached and their heads uncovered. Dr. Wright examined them and found they were both dead. But they were wedged in that it still took a considerable time to get them out. At last, however, at about half-past 2 o'clock, they were got out, and as already stated were corpses. The scenes presented by the members of the family, when they saw their dead brought out, can better be imagined than described. The old man was about 50 and Henry about 20. Both were highly respected by all who knew them. Henry had for some time been a clerk with Mr. Moffat, and lately with Mr. C.E. Moyer. The father had for many years been in the employ of Mr. Breithaupt. We presume Dr. Wright will hold an inquest.

    Notes:

    Fatal Accident in Waterloo

A fatal accident occurred in the town of Waterloo last Tuesday. It appears that Mr. Fred Hopp, a farmer, was that day delivering produce at Mr. Cook's warehouse, Waterloo, and that while thus engaged the horses started. He attempted to hold them when he was knocked down and dragged until his shoulder came into contact with a post. His shoulder was smashed and several ribs broken, one of which penetrated the lung. He lingered til about midnight, when he succumbed to the injuries received. He was aged about 46 years, and leaves a wife, and five children to mourn his fearfully sudden taking off.
