    A. Marshall Cochrane Passes

A former well-known Ayr resident, Albert Marshall Cochrane, died at his home in Preston on Saturday following a long period of indisposition. He was born on the Cochrane homestead, south of Ayr, now owned by his nephew, Alden Cochrane, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cochrane. In the early years of the automobile, he operated an agency in the building now occupied by Ayr Auto Body. He subsequently worked for many years at the former Hecker-HO Company of Canada at Greenfield. When this plant ceased operations during World War II, Mr. Cochrane was employed as a fitter with a Galt firm until a , muscular disorder forced his retirement eight years ago. At that time he moved to Preston. The muscular disorder eventually resulted in the amputation of both legs, but Mr. Cochrane bravely retained his good spirits and jolly disposition throughout the ordeal. During his residence in Ayr, Mr. Cochrane was a well-known figure in sporting and social circles. He was skilled at both curling and lawn bowling, and represented Ayr on many winning entries in these sports. He was a valued member and former elder of Knox United Church. Mr. Cochrane was affiliated with Ayr Masonic Lodge and served a term as Master. Surviving, besides his wife, the former Mary Stewart, are two daughters, Mrs. Ray Diefenbaker (Shirley) of Kitchener and Mrs. George Mellor (Goldie) of Brantford; a son, Calvin of Preston; two sisters, Mrs. Charles Gunn (Margaret) of Ayr and Mrs. Thomas Ritchie (Grace) of RR 2, Paris, and two brothers, Ernest and Robert, both of Ayr. Several grandchildren also survive.

Swan and J. H. Dance, all of Ayr and district.

    Death of a Prominent Farmer

Robert Cochrane Summoned After Brief Illness

The community was sensibly shocked on Wednesday, Feb. 6, when it was learned that Mr. Robert Cochrane had been suddenly called from time to eternity. About a week previously he had attended a sale and became thoroughly chilled. On Saturday, however, he was in Paris, but the next day was stricken with acute inflammatory rheumatism. The disease made rapid progress, and although everything possibly was done to check it the effort proved futile. Mr. Cochrane was one of the most prominent agriculturists in the entire section, owning and cultivating one of the richest and best tilled farms in the province, frequently taking prizes on his products and in the field competition. As a horseman, stockbreeder and exhibitor, he also figured conspicuously, and in recent years was frequently called upon by the Department of Agriculture to act in the capacity of a judge, his decisions giving general satisfaction. From this it will be seen that in the demise of Mr. Cochrane the profession of Agriculture loses one of its leading exponents, the Church a faithful apostle, the community a worthy citizen, and the family a kind, indulgent father and husband. The deceased was still, ordinarily speaking, good for many years of usefulness, being yet under the sixty year mark, but Providence ruled otherwise, and many were the sincere friends who followed his remains to their last resting place with bowed heads and a keen sense of sorrow. He was married in 1881 to Christena Marshall, who survives, together with the following family: Ernest of Bright, Marshall of Galt, Robbie, Margaret and Grace at home. Two brothers and a sister also survive, viz.: James of Edmonton and John and Margaret of Ayr. As a sport Mr. Cochrane was an enthusiastic hunter, also a curler, being tankard skip for years, and winning a number of cups in quoit pitching contests. The funeral on Saturday to Ayr cemetery was largely attended. The service was conducted jointly by Rev. J.J. Brown and Dr. Thomson. Following were the pall-bearers: Messrs. John A. Manson, Albert Gillespie, Thos. Easton, John Easton, Paul Maeder and Wm. Manson.
