Death of Mr. John H. Rutherford

We regret to announce the death of Mr. John H. Rutherford, which occurred at his residence on Monday morning last. Mr. Rutherford took ill on Saturday and sent for his medical attendant, who, after visiting, expressed his fears that a second shock of paralysis was near at hand. His fears were verified, for in the afternoon a severe seizure occurred, affecting his right side and completely prostrating him. Motion, speech and sensibility, one after another succumbed and he sank to his rest on Monday evening. It will be remembered that Mr. Rutherford was first attacked by his disease on the 24th of May, 1885. The shock then was a very severe one, so much so that it was thought he would never be other than a complete cripple; but he made ultimately a partial recovery, and for the last month or so improved greatly. His health, however, was very seriously affected, and while he retained his cheerfulness, he thought his days on earth would not be long. He was born on the farm where he died, and was in his 48th year. For many years, indeed up to the time of his illness, he was a very hard working industrious man, and had accumulated considerable means. He leaves a wife and four children, we think.

His funeral took place on Wednesday and was very largely attended by his friends.

    Notes:

    Death of Mrs. Janet Rutherford

Although an aged person and obviously failing, the death of Mrs. Rutherford was sudden at last. She was born in 1803, married in 1822 and with her husband and family, came to Canada from Roxboroughshire, Scotland, in 1829, the family settling at once on what is now the homestead on which Mr. John H. Rutherford resides in North Dumfries. Amidst all the trials and vicissitudes of a pioneer's life of those days, she reared a family of eight children, three sons and five daughters, five of whom, viz.: -Mr. Wm. Rutherford, of Burford, Mrs. Kingsboro, of South Dumfries, Mrs. John Scott, of Beverly, Mr. John H. Rutherford, of North Dumfries, and Mr. Thos. Rutherford, of Burford, survive him. Her husband died about twenty years ago, the deceased lady continuing to reside on the homestead until a few years ago, when she removed into Galt, where she has since continuously resided. From the establishment of a Presbyterian congregation in Galt, she was a constant member of the body, taking part in all the early labours which led to the formation of the strong congregations who now enjoy the privileges of worship in these modern days. She was a most kindly Christian woman, whose faith was no mere profession, but was carried with her into her every day life. She was in her 82d year when she died.

Her funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon and was attended by a very large number of her old friends and acquaintances from the township and tow. Revds. J. K. Smith and J. A. R. Dickson conducted the services.

The family of whom Mrs. Rutherford was a member, lived much above the average of life. From information given us we find that her grandfather lived to 72; her grandmother to 84; Mr. John Hall to 54; Miss Hall to 72; Mr. Thos. Hall to 69; Miss Mary Hall, still alive at 73; Miss Betsy Hall to 70; Mr. Wm. Hall, still living at 70; Nancy Hall, still alive at 68; and Mr. Robert Hall, still living at 64. With the deceased, the united ages of the twelve amount to 845 years, or an average for each of 70 years and 6 months - a most remarkable record.

    Notes:

Death of Mr. Morris Shellard, Sr., of Beverly

Today it falls to our lot to record the death of this well-known gentleman. For years now he has been an invalid, and has almost dropped from his place in life, but he bore his sufferings and weakness most patiently, and scarcely a word of querulousness passed his lips.

Mr. Shellard was born 16th October, 1809, in Wiltshire, England, and was consequently in his 80th year. He came to Canada in 1832, and entered the employment of Col. Brock Hill, who then owned considerable land in the Township of Woodhouse, Norfolk County, for whom he worked six years, in that time, by dint of industry and economy, saving enough to enable him to buy the land on the 9th concession, Beverly, which he subsequently made one of the best farms in the Township. This land, native, rough, with hardly a means of reaching it except on foot, he settled on in 1838, and from that time, in fair weather or foul, the sturdy form of our old friend could be seen wielding the axe, driving the oxen, or pursuing in some painstaking, industrious way, the course of subduing the wilderness, and bringing foot by foot, the rich land under cultivation. There he spent his days as a prominent farmer, his experience and advice respected, and his efforts always directed towards the improvement of the section in which he lived. He took little part in public matters of any description. He was married in 1838, to Miss Mercer, whose death in March last, we noticed. Of their family there are living, Morris and Thomas, of Beverly, Andrew, of California, Mrs. Cole, of St. Marys, Mrs. Gosman, of Blythe, and Mrs. J. H. Rutherford, of South Dumfries. Their daughter Mrs. Joseph Clouting, died some years ago.

Mr. Shellard will be buried in Mount View Cemetery, today (Friday) the funeral leaving the residence at 2 o'clock p.m.

    Parted at Last

Our obituary today records the death of Charlotte Lowd Mercer, wife of Mr. Morris Shellard, sr., of the 9th concession, Beverly. Mrs. Shellard was in her 78th year. She was born at Melross, Roxboroughshire, Scotland, in 1811, and came with her parents to Canada in 1833. In 1874 (note: 1874 error in obit) she was married, and in 1838 the young couple settled on the lot where they have ever since resided. For some years both Mr. and Mrs. Shellard have been invalids and Mr. Shellard, who still survives, is but a wreck of the stalwart, industrious settler, who in the early days of Beverly shouldered his axe after a day's chopping and walked home while the woods around him rang with the loud howls of the wolves.

The aged couple leave a family consisting of three sons and three daughters, viz.: - Mr. Andrew Shellard, who has been a resident of California for the past twenty years; Mr. Thomas Shellard, of Beverly; and Mr. Morris Shellard, residing on the homestead. Of their daughters, three are living, viz.: - Mrs. J. H. Rutherford, of North Dumfries; Mrs. Henry Cole, of Seaforth; and Mrs. John Gosman, of Blythe, Huron.
