    Notes:

Wahl.-Bro. Henry Wahl was born on Oct. 10, 1840; was married to Widow Sarah Bingiman of Breslau; died near Breslau, Ont., Feb. 24, 1905, aged 64 Y., 4 M., 14 D. To this union were born two sons and four daughters, all of whom reside in Waterloo County and who, with their mother, remain to mourn their sudden bereavement, but not as those who have no hope. Death was due to heart failure. Deceased was a member of the Mennonite church, had been assistant Sunday school superintendent and also superintendent on various occasions, and was also "district man" in the Aid Union for the adjustment of losses by fire among the brotherhood. His remains were buried in the Cressman church cemetery on the 26th of February. The house was crowded with relatives, friends and acquaintances who had met to pay their tribute of respect to the departed brother and of sympathy to the bereaved family. May the God of all comfort and consolation ever be near the bereaved ones to bless and to comfort and guide, as he has promised to be a very present help in time of need. Funeral services were conducted by Bish. Jonas B. Snider in German (text, Matt. 24: 44) and by Pre. J. S.Woolner in English (text, Jas. 4: 14 and Eph. 5: 15

    ______________________

Henry B. Wahl was born in Wilmot township, Oct. 9, 1840 and came with parents Heinrich and Maria Wahl to Rosendale, where he lived until his marriage to Sarah (Shoemaker) Bingeman, widow of Isaac Bingeman of Breslau, on Dec. 7, 1867. They were married by Pastor F. R. Reissman, Lutheran. - Witnesses: H. Eby and A. Petersen.

Acreage was purchased in Horning's Tract and a house and barn erected in 1867. The house was a small frame building and the barn was also small and quite low. This farm is composed of small parcels of land purchased at various intervals. In earlier days the purchase was not recorded until paid for, and this explains the later dates of acquisition.

    June 3, 1869 - James Alderson to Henry B. Wahl - 13.14 acres Horning's Tract
    Dec. 1, 1869 - James Alderson to Henry B. Wahl - 17.75 acres -$115 Horning's Tract
    Dec. 28, 1878 - Wm. B. Thomas to Henry B. Wahl - 31-0-17 acres - Lot ,#53 North of Horning's
    Apr. 9, 1879 - Menno Bowman to Henry B. Wahl - 20-0-0 acres - Lot ,#53 North of Horning's
    Apr. 8, 1882 - Menno Bowman to Henry B. Wahl - 19 1/8 acres - Lot ,#53 North of Horning's
    Mar. 22, 1892 Geo. B. Smith to Henry B. Wahl - 43.6 acres - Horning's Tract $2,180

There were six children born here [Rosendale] who attended S.S.#12 Bloomingdale school. Henry B. Wahl was a Lutheran and Mrs. Wahl was Mennonite, so they compromised and attended her church Snyder's Mennonite church, Bloomingdale. He was a Sunday School superintendent here for some time. A rule of the Mennonite church forbade the use of alcohol, but Henry Wahl had his own convictions on the subject. He would say "Ay gloss beer con ma hovva, ova ains is genunk" (one may have a glass of beer but one is enough).

Henry B. Wahl was also a shoemaker. He kept a suoply of leather on hand and made shoes for neighbors and his family. Sometimes some of the children, especially the girls, would complain about their heavy shoes, which were made of second or third grade leather. The best grades were manufactured into shoes for customers who paid cash.

The daughters made their own dresses at fourteen years of age. No patterns were provided and dresses in this era took a great deal of material and look quite complicated in comparison to our present day styles.
Mixed farming was the method of agriculture, and the usual livestock composed of grade cattle , pigs, horses, chickens, etc. were kept. The family contributed the farm labor until they married and left for homes of their own. Henry B. Wahl died Feb. 24, 1904 and is buried in the Cressman Mennonite cemetery, Breslau, Ontario.

Mrs. Henry B. Wahl continued farming operations with the help of her sons Henry Allan and Solomon Edward, until 1910, when Solomon was married. Now the house was divided, Mrs, Wahl and son Henry Allan occupying the one part and Solomon and his bride the other part. Mrs. Henry B. Walh milked her own cow and maintained a garden, which supplied her needs. She maintained and drove her own horse and buggy until she was 80 years olf and over. She was quite content to live in a primitive manner, and refused to have hydro install. In 1913 son Henry Allan moved to the village of Bloomingdale. Mrs. Wahl continued living her until her death in Jan 1924. She is buried in the Cressman Mennonite cemetery, Breslau.
