    FIRE VICTIM PASSED WAY

    Isaac Clemens Died it Night As Result of Burns Received Tuesday


    As the result of burns received in the gasoline explosion fire at the tannery of the Ora County Leather Co. on C street, yesterday af ternoon, Isaac Clemens died last night at 7 o'clock at thanta Ana Hospital, where he was taken immediately after he was []red. The man was burned from head to foot, and from the first there was little hope of his recovery.

    Mr. Clemens came to county fourteen years ago. A few months ago he sold his ranch near Anaheim and moved here, where had started the tannery on land leased from the Merchants & Manufacturers' Association. He leaves a wife and a son, Harry Clemens, of Santa Ana, and a daughter, Mrs. Ref[] Woodington of Smeltzer.

    The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock from the residence at 505 East Fifth street.

    SEVERELY BURNED IN FIRE THAT DESTROYS TANNERY
    Proprietor of Place Knocked Down and Rendered Unconscious by Explosion

    SANTA ANA, April 27.-Isaac Clemens was severely burned this afternoon in a fire that destroyed the tannery building recently erected on C street by Isaac Clemens & Co. The fire is believed to have been caused by the explosion of some chemical used in the tanning business. Clemens was knocked down and rendered partially unconscious, and while in that condition was burned about the head, face and arms. He was taken to the Santa Ana hospital and his condition is tonight considered critical. The property loss is estimated to be $500.

    TANNER DIES.

    Isaac Clemens, who was terribly burned in an explosion and fire at the Orange County Leather Company tannery Tuesday afternoon, died at the Santa Ana Hospital last last night as the result of his injuries. Clemens struck a match to light a cigar, and the gasoline tank exploded. Clemens leaves a widow, a son Harry of Santa Ana, and daughter, Mrs. Retta Woodington, of Smeltzer.

    David M. Clemens, "the eldest son of Jesse and Margaret (Miller) Clemens, was born June 26, 1818. He was married to Sallie, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Bergey) Hagey. She was born March 2nd, 1823, and died April 23, 1879. Soon after their marriage they moved to Wilmot Township on the old 'Tohman Farm', thence back on his father's farm near Hespeler. From here they moved to Chicopee where he was engaged in the sawmill After residing here several years they moved to North Dumfries Township, one mile west of Roseville, on lot No. 46, Con. 12, where they resided until their deaths. He died June 23, 1887. To them was born a family of thirteen children"

    Jesse Clemens, second son of Abraham and Rebecca (Miller) Clemens, was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, June 12th 1791. In 1809 he came to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, near Hespeler. He was married in 1813 to Margaret Miller, who was born in July, 1789, and died October 18th, 1861. They resided on the farm now in possession of Noah Scheirich, about three miles north-east of Preston where they commenced to farm soon after their marriage. To them were born nine children"

    Clemens, - on the 6th of January, in Waterloo Co. Ont., of the infirmities of old age and dropsy, Bro Jesse Clemens, aged 90 yrs.,6 mos. and 24 days. he was born in Chester Co.Pa in 1791 and was a faithful member (sp) of the Mennonite Church. He bore his bodily afflictions with great patience, and showed an unbroken faith in Christ to the end. He was buried in Hagey's burying ground. services in English and German by J. Woolner.
