    Notes:

    John Lehman, 57 years of age, died at his home in this village at 5: 30 p. m. Saturday, July 25, after a linger illness of diabetes. He was senior member of the firm of Lehman & Zehr, who have conducted a sawmill here for the past few years. He was a stockholder and director of Croghan Nation Bank since its organization. He was also a member of the Croghan fire department. Mr. Lehman was born January 4, 1868, in New Bremen son of Peter and Catharine Widrick Lehman. December 25, 1890, he was united in marriage to Magdalene Kennel of Wellesley, Ontario and in 1906 moved to Aldrich where he acted as foreman in a lumber camp. The following year he came to Croghan and purchased a sawmill from Joseph Farney. In 1910 he purchased the sash and blind factor from the Virkler estate. In 1923 he entered into partnership with Benjamin Zehr in the Lehman-Zehr Lumber Company, which he conducted until his death. Besides his bereaved wife he is survived by one daughter Mrs. Benjamin Zehr and three grandchildren: five brothers, Christopher, Simon, Andrew of Beaver Falls: Donald and Joseph of this village: two sisters Mrs. Joseph Lehman of Kitchener, Ontario and Mrs. John A. Zehr of Beaver Falls. The funeral was held Tuesday at 9: 30 a. m. at the home and at 10: 30 at the Amish Mennonite church of which he was an active member. Rev. Michael Zehr of Pigeon, Mich. officiated at the ceremony. The five brothers acted as bearers. Mr. Lehman was one of the most prominent business men of the community and was always much interested in the welfare of the village. He leaves many friends who mourn his loss. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved family.1a

    Mrs. Magdalene Kennel Lehman, 68, widow of John Lehman and a resident of this village for the past 35 years died at her home on Main street at 5: 30 Monday morning following a week's illness. She suffered a stroke a week ago. She was born in Wellesley, Ont. Canada, on August 2, 1871, a daughter of Christiana A. and Magdalene Albright Kennel Her early life was spent in Canada and 50 years ago she was married to John Lehman in Welesley. The couple came to this country in 1905, settling in Lewis County. In 1906 Mr. Lehman purchased the sawmill business of Joseph F. Farney which he operated until his death in July, 1925. The business is now operated by his son-in-law, Benjamin F Zehr. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Benjamin F. (Sussana) Zehr, three grandchildren, the Misses Kathlene L. and Charlotte Zehr, and Mark J. Zehr all of this village; two sisters, Mrs. Susan Yousey, who has resided with Mrs. Lehman for the past five years, and Mrs. Barbara Bast, Wellesley, Ont Prayer services were held at the family home Thursday at noon (E. S.T.) and from the Amish Mennonite church at 1 p. m. Burial will be made in the church cemetery in this village.

    Notes:

    Bish. Peter Lehman was born on the 16th of July 1829, in Harperich, Canton Grosztennchen, Alsace Lorraine, Europe. On the 15th of February 1852, he emigrated to America and founded a peaceful home here, where he spent the remainder of his days. On the 23d of November 1858, he was united in matrimony with Catharine Lehman (nee Widrich). The union was blessed with ten children, all of whom survive him, together with fifteen grandchildren. One grandchild preceded him 12 years and 4 months ago. He labored faithfully in the ministry of God's word for about twenty-eight years in our Amish congregation in Lewis Co., N. Y., and 8 years and 7 months as bishop. His death was caused by asthma and occurred at 6 o'clock on the morning of the 14th of July 1896. His remains were laid in their last earthly resting place followed by a sorrowing family and congregation, whom he had for many years served as a faithful and loving natural and spiritual father. May God comfort the bereft hearts.
