B.E. BECHTEL PASSES AWAY AT WATERLOO

Prominent and Widely Knows Citizen Died Suddenly

    INSURANCE INSPECTOR AND MANUFACTURER

The sudden passing shortly after one o'clock on Tuesday morning of Mr. Byron E. Bechtel, Inspector of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Company and for years one of the best known brick manufacturers of the province, came as a distinct shock to his family and friends. As he was about to retire on Monday evening after a busy day he was seized with a heart attack to which he succumbed shortly after one o'clock in the morning. His death removes a leading and highly regarded citizen of the town of Waterloo where he had resided for a period of over fifty years.

Born in Blair, Sept. 30th, 1859, the son of Isaac and Jane Bechtel, he resided there with his parents until about 10 years of age when the family removed to Bridgeport. Following two years' residence in that village they moved to Waterloo where he had since resided. He received his education in the public school at Waterloo and at the K-W. High School, and after securing his teaching certificate he taught school in Haysville and Williamsburg for two years. He then became a member of the staff of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Company. A few years later he severed his connection with the company to enter into partnership with the late Mr. Buckberrough, forming the insurance agency of Buckberrough and Bechtel. In the year 1903, after fifteen years in agency work, the firm sold out to Mr. C. A. Boehm. Mr. Bechtel, who had been brought up a brick- maker, his father, the late Isaac Bechtel, having operated a brickyard for years, then became active in the business of brick manufacturing and also for a time carried on the manufacture of brick-making machinery, taking charge of the plant in 1892. He was of an inventive turn of mind and held valuable patents to brick-making machinery designed by him, which have been installed in brickyards in both Canada and the United States.

In 1915 he was appointed inspector of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Company, a position he held until his death. He also continued to operate the brickyard north of Waterloo which he owned for many years.

The late Mr. Bechtel was recognized as one of the best informed brick men in the Dominion and in earlier years was active in the Canadian National Clay Products Association of Canada of which he enjoyed the distinction of being the first president.

He was also active in municipal circles for about ten years during which he was a valued member of the town council.

The late Mr. Bechtel was an Odd fellow, having been a member for many years of the local lodge.

His wife, Anna Margaret Taylor, daughter of the late C. M. Taylor, survives, together with a family of seven children, viz: Charles, of Edmonton, Alta.; Wilhelmina, Toronto; Myrtle (Mrs. C. S. Bean) of near Preston; Edith (Mrs. Howard Reed) Waterloo; Margie (Mrs. Glen Eby) Tara; Jane (Mrs. Hugh Van Every) Waterloo; and Ruth, (Mrs. Sanford Whiting), of Waterloo. He also leaves five sisters and one brother, viz: Mrs. A. C. Biggs, Burlington; Mrs. William McBain, Mountain View, Cal.; Eloine, Waterloo; Mrs. R. O. Dobbin, Waterloo; Mrs. Carrie R. Ratz, Toronto, and W. B. Bechtel, Kitchener. Three sisters and one brother predeceased him, viz: Mrs. Homer Watson, Doon; Mrs. Emily Martin, Waterloo; Ella May, Water- loo, and Milton, Elmira.
The funeral will take place from his late residence, 59 Allen St., Waterloo, on Thursday at two o'clock p.m., to the Blair cemetery for Interment.

The first meeting to examine teachers in this county was held at Freeport in December, 1843. The commissioners present were Dr. Fulsom, James Phin, William Tilt, Jacob Lutz and a Church of England clergyman from Guelph who presided. The candidates for certificates were Amos Adams, Benjamin Burkholder, Nelson Newcombe, Elias Eby and one Lazarus who was then teaching in Berlin. Mr. Lazarus, after glancing around the room and making an estimate of the calibre of the Board, walked out remarking quite audibly that he was not going to be examined by a "set of farmers." The other four received their certificates, the first issued in the county, but Mr. Lazarus received none and had to resign his position in Berlin. For subsequent examinations teachers were obliged to go to Guelph, the then county town of the united counties of Wellington, Waterloo and Grey.

....The most prominent teachers of those early days were Benjamin Eby (Bishop), James Deary or Derry, William Tilt, James Dickson, James Milroy, William Veitch, Noah Bechtel, William Telfer, Isaac Z. Hunsicker, Jonathan Good and John Bowman (father of the late I. E. Bowman, M. P.). ....

    Death of Mr. William Tilt
    - This worthy gentleman, who had been ailing for some time from heart disease, passed quietly away in his rest on Wednesday evening, the 6th inst. There was not a getter known man in the township than the deceased, and he won the respect and admiration of all who came in contact with him, by his ? way and quiet, unassuming manner. By his family he was beloved; they clung to him, sought his counsels, and courted his approval to the last. Mr. Tilt was born in the town of Carpel, Surrey Co., England, on June 26, 1805. In 1832 he came to Canada. Before coming he taught school for some years in his native place. On his coming here he was engaged by Mr. Van Egmond, a Canada Land Co. agent, to accompany him to Huron Co., where he remained for three years, teaching Mr. Van Egmond's children and helping to lay out and survey the Huron road. - Leaving there in 1835 he came to Blair, where he taught for several years in a frame school that stood on the site of his late residence. Afterwards he was variously occupied til 1861 in running a tannery and in mercantile pursuits. In that year he was appointed clerk of the township of Waterloo, and held that post continuously till the 31st of March, 1883, when he resigned just four days before his death. The council, on accepting his resignation, donated him $500. He was twice married and his second wife survives him. He was the father of seventeen children, thirteen of whom are still living. At present there are fifty six of his grandchildren and fifteen of his great-grandchildren living.
