    J. H. Dance - A prominent, retired Ayr businessman

John Hall (Jack) Dance of Telfer Place, Paris, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 31st. He was in his 88th year. Born in Blenheim Township, he was a son of the late James Dance and Janet Hall. He lived all his life in the Ayr-Paris area. Mr. Dance originally farmed south of Ayr. In the mid1940's he and Jairus Maus established Ayr Feed and Supply on the main floor of Reid's Hall, Northumberland Street. Subsequently he took over the complete operation and as the business grew into a major supplier for area farmers, he was joined by his sons Don and Doug. In the early 1960's the mill was hit by two disastrous fires, but each time the facility was completely rebuilt. Mr. Dance never lost his love of farming. He and his sons founded Ayr Broiler Co., purchased the old Ayr rink on Stanley Street, converted it, and for years raised broiler chickens in it. Later modern new facilities were built outside town, the building torn down and the area now makes up part of the Kirkwood property. In later years he became actively involved in raising prize-winning Simmental cattle and was well-known in the Ontario Simmental Association. Mr. Dance was a constant booster of Ayr and many of the community's organizations and projects. He served at one time on Ayr council, active member of Knox United Church and church boards; 50 year member and past master of Ayr Masonic Lodge No. 172. Mr. Dance and his wife, the former Mary Elizabeth (Bessie) Telfer celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in September. Survived by his wife, respected father of Jane and her husband Marlen Vincent of Seaforth, Don and his wife Anne and Doug and his wife Carole all of Ayr. He will be sadly missed by seven grandchildren and spouses, five great-grandchildren, a brother Robert and his wife Mildred of Milton, a sister Mae and her husband Max Miles of Cambridge, sister-in-law Olive (Mrs. James) Dance of Cambridge, and Berniece (Mrs. William) Dance of Brantford. Predeceased by granddaughter, Karen Vincent, brothers Wallace and his wife Mildred, James, Norman and his wife Margaret and William, by sisters Isabel and Jean and step-sister Marion Hall. Rested at the Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, Ayr, where funeral service will be held today (Wed.) at 2 p.m. Rev. James Young, assisted by Rev. Doug Willis, will officiate. Interment Ayr Cemetery.

There passed away at her home, lot 2, con. 6, Blenheim on Friday morning, Sept. 16, a very estimable lady in the person of Mrs. James Dance, after a short illness of only about a week. - Mrs. Dance, whose maiden name was Janet Hall, was the eldest daughter of Walter and Isabelle Hall, Ayr, and was very highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends, who deeply sympathize with her sorely bereaved husband and family. The deceased, who was married in Blenheim in 1896 by the Rev. J. S. Hardie, the then pastor of Stanley-st. church, Ayr, was in her 37th year, and strangely enough the day of her death was the 14th anniversary of her wedding day, and the 13th anniversary of her eldest son's birthday. She is the third member of Mr. and Mrs. Hall's family that has entered into eternal rest within a period of slightly over two years - the others being Mrs. John R. Easton of Paris, and Mr. John D. Hall of Ayr. Mrs. Dance leaves a family of five - four boys and one girl. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon to Ayr cemetery, followed thence by a large concourse of friends and acquaintances. The services at the home and the grave were conducted by Rev. D. I. Ellison. The pallbearers were Messrs. James and William Scott, Charles Rafferty, Alex. Kennedy, Murdo McRae and Sheldon Stockton.

    Notes:

Old Pioneer Gone - Late Ephraim Dance Lived in this District for 75 Years - With the passing of Ephraim Dance on Sunday, Blenheim township loses one of its oldest residents. Mr. Dance was born in England 87 years ago and came to Canada with his parents when but a lad of 10 years of age and settled at St. George. He removed to the farm of the late Thomas Marshall, North Dumfries, two years later, and had lived in this vicinity ever since he had resided on the farm on which he died for the past 40 years. He continued to lead an active life up to within a few weeks of his demise, which was hastened by a stroke. Of a quiet and friendly disposition, he had many fine qualities, and was greatly esteemed by a large circle of friends. He was a former member of Stanley Street Church, and for many years was a member of the Board of Managers. In his boyhood days he attended the old Shantz school at Reidsville and was the only male survivor of a large group of ex-pupils who had their photos taken at the Reidsville Reunion 33 years ago. In politics he was a life-long Liberal. He is survived by one son, Reeve James Dance, of Blenheim township. Also by 5 grandsons and 5 granddaughters. His life's partner, whose maiden name was Agnes Wallace, predeceased him 32 years ago. The funeral, which was largely attended took place to the Ayr Cemetery on Tuesday afternoon.
