    Joseph Ruth

On New Year's Day one of the oldest native born citizens of this district, passed away, in the person of Joseph Ruth, a well-known and highly respected farmer. Deceased was born on the Ruth homestead about 1-1/2 miles north of Elmira, 70 years ago. With the exception of 6 years during which he lived in Elmira, he spent his life on the farm on which he was born. He was known as an honorable and conscientious man of a kindly and genial disposition. He was industrious, frugal and helpful to his neighbors. Besides conducting his farm he was a carpenter and contractor.

Thirty nine years ago he was married to Rosale Schill. With her he raised eight children, six of whom, together with their mother, survive him. The children are: Agnes and Christina, at home; Rosale, in Wisconsin; Edward, in the Canadian Army in England, and Joseph and Lorenz at home. Deceased was a consistent and native member of the Roman Catholic Congregation. His funeral will take place on Saturday next. Services will be held at 10 o'clock a.m. at his late residence, then at St. Theresa R.C. church, Elmira, after which interment will take place at the R. C. Cemetery north of Elmira.

    Notes:

SAINT TERESA OF AVILA ROMAN CATHOLIC CEMETERY

This was the original churchyard of St. Theresa's parish, Elmira. The church was moved into the town, although the foundations of the original church can still be seen in the cemetery. The spelling of the name of the parish has changed through the years, but for some time now it has been established that the patron saint of the parish is saint Teresa of Avila and this spelling is the proper one now. The cemetery is found at Lot 92, German company Tract, north of the town on the Alma-Arthur road. It sits on a gentle hill to the west of the road and is well kept, dominated by a large whitecross. Two sides of the cemetery are bordered by lilac trees planted seventy or eighty years ago, which add a great deal to thebeauty of the spot. An incomplete deed indicates that the land was deeded to the diocese by Joseph Ruth in 1853, but this is disputed by other documents.1a

St. Teresa of Avila Roman Catholic Church Begun: 1851

Prior to 1848, as a mission of New Germany (Maryhill), this area of Woolwich was served by missionaries from New Germany who celebrated Mass in homes in the area once or twice a year. Construction was begun on a small frame church in 1848 on an acre of land north of Elmira. (This land which was purchased from Joseph Ruth, is now St. Teresa's Cemetery.) However, it was not until 1851 in the time of Father John Holzer of New Germany that the church was finished; it was dedicated on the second Sunday after Easter in that year. During the 1860s and 1870s the church was attached to St. Clements.

Land in town was purchased on June 14, 1888 from John Ratz for a new brick church which was built and completed in 1889 during the ministry of Rev. Stephen Foerster of New Germany. The first frame church was dismantled in 1905. A new church was built in 1991-1992 on Flamingo Drive just south of the school; the old yellow brick church was listed for sale in March 1992.
Monthly services were conducted from 1889-1915 by Rev. Foerster, and by priests from St. Jerome's in Kitchener from 1915-1922. A Mission of Macton then from 1922-1924, the congregation finally received its first resident priest, in the person of Father J.J. Arnold, on July 24, 1924.
