James W. Henderson, 85, Passed Away Friday

The Ayr community was saddened by the loss of one of its oldest and most respected citizens on Friday night in the death of James William Henderson, in his 86th year. The late Mr. Henderson was born in this village and spent his long lifespan here, where he developed many friends among several generations.

With his passing, the family name, originated here by his father, Richard Henderson, passes with him. He was the last surviving descendant of this pioneer Scotsman who skillfully shod horses in the days when Ayr was young. Variously a blacksmith, livery operator and an official in the old Hilborn hockey stick factory in former years, Mr. Henderson lived retired during the latter part of his life. From his gracious residence on Northumberland street, he walked down town every day for the mail, until recently, and never failed to pass the time of day with the old friends he encountered. It must have been a matter of great personal satisfaction to Mr. Henderson that he was never forgotten by natives of Ayr who returned to visit after having left this village in years gone by. Always they called on him to reminisce on the days long before the turn of the century, when men of Mr. Henderson's generation were developing this village.

A son of Richard Henderson and Margaret Hope, the deceased learned the blacksmith trade in his father's shop, next door to the Henderson residence, where Sherk Sales & Service is now located. Later he was associated in a thriving livery stable business with the late John Wyllie, directly across the street on what is now the Hugh Clark property. Some years later Mr. Henderson accepted a ranking position with the Hilborn company, situated on the present site of Greenwood Park, which he retained until the factory ceased operating about 25 years ago.

In younger life Mr. Henderson was an athlete of note, indulging in most of the team sports which emblazoned the name of Ayr across the sporting scene in the '80's and '90's. He excelled in hockey and soccer in that lively era when players started and finished the game without substitution. As time passed along, he became interested in curling and bowling and for years was a member of both local clubs. His popularity in social and fraternal circles was indicated by the fact that he was a member of both the Ayr Masonic Lodge and Dolman Lodge, I.O.O.F. He was also a member of the Paris chapter, Royal Arch Masons. He attended the former Stanley Street Presbyterian Church and, following union, Knox United Church. On Sunday evening members of Ayr Lodge paid last respects at Masonic rites held at the W. O. Ball Funeral Parlor, conducted by Wor. Bro. John Kanmacher.

    The Funeral

Funeral service was held from the W. O. Ball Funeral Parlor on Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. W. Currie. The profusion of floral offerings bore mute testimony to the esteem in which the late Mr. Henderson was held in the community. Pallbearers were: G. S. Dalrymple, James Swan, R. E. Maeder, George H. Lawrence, James D. Patterson and John H. Dance. Interment was made in Ayr Cemetery.
