    Notes:

Gordon Hallman, Reeve Of Wilmot, Killed By Falling Tree

Mr. Gordon B. Hallman, reeve of Wilmot Township, was fatally injured about 11.30 a. m. when he was struck by a falling tree while directing the cutting timber in the bush of Max Lass, the former Geo, A. Miller property, east of Haysville,. He suffered a broken back, a broken leg and internal injuries and died about half an hour after the accident. The tree had become lodged against another tree and when it suddenly became free it caught Mr. Hallman before he could make a move and pinned him underneath.

Coroner Dr. T. B. Feick of New Hamburg was called but Mr. Hallman died a few minutes after his arrival. An ambulance was sent from the K-W Hospital and reached the scene shortly after. Dr. Feick deemed an inquest not necessary.

The late Mr. Hallman operated a saw mill about five miles east of the accident and had bought the bush last winter to remove the timber.

Mr. Hallman was born at New Dundee, a son of the late. Mr. and Mrs. Jacob C. Hallman. He was in his 56th year. Mr. Hallman was prominent in public and church affairs. As reeve of Wilmot he was in line for the wardenship of Waterloo County next year. He entered municipal life as deputy-reeve in 1941 since which time he was also a member of the Waterloo County Council. He was this year's chairman of the Roads and Bridges Committee and was also chairman of the Reforestation Committee and the House of Refuge Board and also a member of the board of directors of the North Waterloo Farmer's Mutual Fire Insurance Co., of which he was president last year.

Mr. Hallman was a member of the United Brethren Church, New Dundee, a member of the board of trustees, teacher of the junior Bible Class and a member of the council of administration of the Ontario Conference of the United Brethren in Christ Church, and was widely known and esteemed. His tragic death is deeply deplored.

The accident victim was twice married. His first wife, May Cas-\\sel, died in 1920, and in 1931, he married Essie Hallman, who survives him with two sons, Willard, Walters Falls, Ont., Robert, at home; four daughters, Alice, Kitchener, Jean and Kathryn, at home and Mrs. Rothan (Helen) Hawthorne, St. Catharines; and one sister, Mrs. A. E. Bean, New Hamburg.

The funeral was held Thursday afternoon with private service at the home at 2 o'clock, followed by public service at New Dundee United Brethren Church and interment in Union Cemetery, New Dundee. Rev. L. Gingerich conducted the services.

Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Cassel 3rd Oldest Married Couple

Lifelong Residents of New Dundee District 52 Years Married (By Chronicle Correspondent) New Dundee

the third oldest married couple in this district, Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Cassel observed their 52nd wedding anniversary quietly at their home on Front St. on Thursday, Jan. 5th, Mr. and Mrs. Cassel have been life-long residents of this community although they have only resided in the village for the past 22 years after retiring from farming on the land now owned by Cameron Bock, three and one-half miles west of here. Previous to that they farmed on the old Cassel homestead, one mile west of the village which is now owned by Ervin Sararas.

Among their recollections of early farm life, Mr. Cassel recalls how he and numbers of other farmers in the district teamed wood to Galt a distance of twelve miles during the winter months, when wood was practically the only fuel in use. Mrs. Cassel also remembers how she made quantities of farmer's cheese for which there was always a ready market in the surrounding towns.

Mr. and Mrs. Cassel have enjoyed travelling, during their 52 years of married life. Their wedding trip was spent in Pennsylvania and in later years they visited Michigan at various times and also travelled to the Canadian West in 1919.

Mr. Cassel vividly recalls attending the Chicago World's fair in 1893 as well as a trip to Alberta in 1900 when the West was still sparsely settled. He remembers that a single shed was the only building on the site where the town of Didsbury is now located. Even during the past year Mr. and Mrs. Cassel made a trip to Montreal, Que., where they visited the latter's brother, Mr. Abram S. Hallman, who was the best man at their wedding in 1887.

Mrs. Cassel who celebrated her 71st birthday on Christmas Day was formerly Sarah Ann Hallman, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Abram S. Hallman, Sr., and Mr. Cassel who is 82 years of age was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jesse B. Cassel. They were united in marriage by Rev. Jacob Bowman, one-time pastor of the United Brethren Church at New Dundee. Mrs. Cassel has been closely associated in the work of this church for many years and only recently resigned as teacher in the Sunday School after having completed 21 consecutive years of teaching. Mr. and Mrs. Cassel have four children living, 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Their many friends wish them continued health and happiness.

    ______________

Hallman. - Mary (Clemens) Hallman was born Sept. 11, 1834; died Jan. 17, 1915, at the ripe old age of 80 y. 4 m. 6 d. She was united in wedlock July 18, 1852, with John S. Hallman, whose beloved companionship she enjoyed for 41 years. He preceded her 21 years. This union was blessed with a family of 5 sons and 7 daughters, all of whom are still living except one daughter who died in 1882. She was converted early in life and was a faithful and consistent member of the Mennonite Church for over 60 years. She was blessed with a wonderful constitution, for besides the cares and duties of raising a large family, she managed many a time to lend a helping hand in the families of neighbors, often succeeding well in the treatment of sick children in those olden days when doctors were few and far away. In her declining years she was afflicted with rheumatism and often longed to depart and be with Christ, but although she suffered much at times, she always seemed to be resigned to the will of the Lord, and we have the blessed hope that He has taken her to Himself. Funeral services were conducted at the Blenheim Church by E. S. Bauman from Jno. 14: 18, 19, in German, and Jonas Snider from Rev. 14: 13, in English. Buried in cemetery near the church
