    DAVID CALDWELL

The death of David Caldwell, removes from our midst one who has been long and favorably known among us, both as a man of business and as a Christian. Many years ago he founded the Galt nurseries and by dint of hard work, perseverance and push that he succeeded in making them the source or supply for trees of all kinds throughout a large portion of Ontario. In the early days the difficulties and hardships of the nursery business were very many and many of his friends have frequently been entertained for hours by accounts of his experiences when selling and delivering trees, in a new settlement. Naturally of a hopeful and happy disposition he braved and conquered difficulties that met him like other pioneers of this country. Fruit trees, evergreens and shrubbery and well laid-out handsome lawns stand and remain as monuments to his memory, all round us. Mr. Caldwell was also a Christian worker of note. He was converted under the ministry of Rev. Mr. Smiley, Fergus and joined the Presbyterian Church. He was one of the aggressive and helpful workers during the great revival of over 20 years ago, when Galt and Knox church were so stirred on the question of questions, salvation and assurance thereof to the individual. Some 9 or 10 years ago, Mr. Caldwell retired from active business life and devoted his time solely to Christian and evangelistic work. God honored his work and many were converted through his efforts in different places. Having a clear and definite experience of spiritual religion, a constant Bible student and constantly experiencing the blessedness of the Comforter's presence, power and willingness to keep and enable him to live a conqueror's life over the world, the flesh and the devil. He was owing to this, one of the happiest and brightest of useful men in our community. Many are the Christians who owe much to him for light imparted and cheer given when downcast and discouraged. He has been called to his rest at the close of 1893. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord; from henceforth, yea saith the spirit, they do rest from their labors and their works." His age was 72 years. His death was calm, peaceful and happy. Mr. Caldwell leaves behind him his aged partner and also several sons and daughters. His son William continues the nursery here.

    Notes:

Death of Mr. James Gourlay - On Tuesday morning last this well-known resident of Galt died from a severe attack of inflammation of the lungs, after an illness of about four days. Deceased was long and most favorably known in Galt. Coming to Canada from Glasgow in 1842, he occupied a farm for a little over a year near Carlton Place. In 1844 he first came to reside here, at once entering the newly-established Foundry, (then back of the Dumfries Mills), of James Crombie & Co. In his capacity of Machinist, he continued in Mr. Crombie's employ until about the year 1854, when he left Galt and went to Varna, where he established a Plough Factory. The country was too new for success, however, and the "Vance" Flouring Mill in Clinton requiring a competent practical machinist to attend to it, Mr. Crombie at once recommended Mr. Gourlay, who assumed the position, retaining it for about four years. He then left Clinton and assumed his old position in Mr. Crombie's Foundry at Galt, then about passing into the hands of Messrs. Goldie & McCulloch where he continued as foreman for many years, during which time all the heavy machinery for the Hamilton Rolling Mills was turned out. In their employ he remained until his son, Mr. John Gourlay, in 1872, entered into partnership with the late Adam Cant, and established the Galt Machine Works, when he left the establishment of Messrs. Goldie & McCulloch and entered the workshop of the new firm, with whom he has continued until his death. Mr. Gourlay was a skillful mechanic, and remarkable for the steadiness with which he was to be found at his work. As a private citizen he was very unassuming. Trades are said to run in families, and in this case it would certainly seem to be so. Mr. John Gourlay, the eldest son, the second son, James, dying about ten years ago, is one of the firm of Cant, Gourlay & Co.; Mr. Alex. Gourlay is foreman machinist, and Mr. Wm. Gourlay, a moulder in the same works. Of Mr. Gourlay's four daughters one is married to Mr. Wm. Ewart, of Oshawa; one to Mr. John Kirk, and the two youngest are yet at home.

    Death of Mrs. James Gourlay

Succumbing to the third attack, of paralysis of the brain, this well-known resident of Galt passed away on Sunday morning last a little after 7 o'clock. Twice previously, Mrs. Gourlay had been attacked, the second attack being so serious that her life was almost despaired of, but she recovered and was apparently in good health up to the time of her seizure on Sunday morning. Rising as usual that morning she opened the shades of the windows to air the house and then laid down on the bed again. Her daughter noticed that she was breathing very hard and spoke to her. Getting no reply, she became alarmed, and trying to wake her found she was insensible. From that time to the end was but a few minutes, the deceased lady passing away unconscious and apparently without suffering.

Mrs. Gourlay was the widow of our well-known resident, Mr. Jas. Gourlay of the Electric Light Works; Messrs. Willian and Alex Gourlay of the Macgregor, Gourlay & Co. Machine Works, and Mrs. John Kirk, Mrs. Wm. Ewart and Misses Margaret and Elizabeth Gourlay.

The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon and was very largely attended. As an evidence of the longevity of some of our residents we may say that the united ages of the six old friends of the family who were pall-bearers amounted to 413 years, and that Mrs. Gourlay's mother is yet alive, being we believe, upwards of 98 years of age.
