    ______________

THOMSON, ADAM was born in June, 1858 in Guelph. He was a graduate of Trinity Medical College, Toronto, in 1887, and through postgraduate work in Scotland, became a licentiate of both Glasgow and Edinburgh.

He settled in Galt in 1888, as was reported by the Dumfries Reformer on March 22nd.: New Doctor.

As will be seen by card in another column, Dr. A. Thomson has commenced the practise of his profession in Town. Dr. Thomson is a young man well known in Galt and vicinity and is Licentiate of Edinburgh and Glasgow as well as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. His office is opposite Bond's livery stable. Main Street.

On April 20, 1923 the Galt Evening Reporter said of him. (he was) "one of the best known figures in the professional, political and social life of this district" and went on to say

For many years he had been actively interested in municipal affairs beginning his career as a representative of the people on the public school board, and then entering the town council, in which he served for many years. He obtained the highest office that his fellow citizens could bestow upon him, the mayoralty, in 1906 and 1907, He was well known politically, being one of the old types of Liberal and one of the staunchest members of that party in the Dominion and one of the best political speakers whoever stepped on the public platform, having a splendid command of English and being a close student of politics. He possessed ready wit and was always in demand for platform work. He had been an unsuccessful candidate of the Liberal party on three occasions, twice running for the federal house, and once for the Ontario house. The last time he appeared before the electorate was in the wartime election of 1917 when he was beaten by F. S. Scott, Conservative. Despite these reverses he however never lost faith in the cause of liberalism. Following the 1917 campaign his throat became affected and his speaking career was ended. lt was a great handicap but he bore it with patience.

A prominent medical practitioner, he carried on his practice for thirty four years. He served as Medical Officer of Health for North Dumfries and Waterloo Township for many years. He died suddenly on April 19, 1923, and was survived by his widow, two daughters and one son, Dr. A. Findlay Thomson.
