    Notes:

Col. J. Norman MacRae was born in Blair in 1883, a son of Samuel MacRae. He came to Galt at the age of four and was educated at Central Public School and at Galt Collegiate Institute. He worked for two years in Winnipeg as the private secretary for the general freight agent of the Canadian Pacific Railway in Winnipeg. While in the west he contracted a disease that left him paralyzed for some time. Upon recovery he decided to become an osteopath and entered Kirksville College at Kirksville, Missouri. He returned to Galt in about 1906 to establish a practice which he was to operate until his death in 1953. During the early days of World War I, Dr. MacRae enlisted with the 34th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, and served in France with the 18th Battalion. He was awarded the Military Cross by King George V for destroying enemy machine guns in the face of heavy fire. Following the war he served a term as the commanding officer of the Highland Light Infantry of Canada and was promoted to the rank of Colonel when he was placed in command of the second infantry brigade. Dr. MacRae served as president of the Canadian Kennel Club, the South Waterloo Agricultural Society, the Galt Humane Society and the Galt Kiwanis Club. He was also a director of the Canadian National Livestock Records and of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. In addition, he served for many years on both the Galt Board of Health and the Galt Hospital Board. He was a member of Galt city council from 1938 to 1946 and was the Conservative Party candidate in the provincial election of 1946. He died on January 30, 1953 and is buried in Mount View Cemetery.

    Notes:

Death of Thos. Nichol, of Blenheim - The intelligence of the death of this well-known resident of Blenheim will be painful to many who enjoyed his friendship and respected him for the kindness and uprightness of his life. The circumstances attending Mr. Nichol's death were that as he was walking on the ground at the Fair at London on Wednesday of last week, he was suddenly stricken most severely with paralysis, and insensibility at once ensued. He was carried to the Tecumseh House and all possible aid given him, but he never recovered consciousness and passed to his rest on Sunday afternoon last. His remains were brought to his late residence near Plattsville, and his funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon last, being attended by an immense number of his friends in that section, as also from Galt, Ayr and elsewhere. Mr. Nichol leaves a family of five sons, two of whom are in Manitoba, and five daughters, of whom Mrs. Samuel McRae, of Galt is one. Mr. George Nichol, of Beverly, is a brother.

    Notes:

Archibald Scott was born in 1798 in Ecclefechan, Dumfrieshire, Scotland. He married Jane Ballantyne and emigrated to Canada with his wife and then six children and settle in Scott's Corners in Beverly Twp in 1831. The original Scott homestead was owned first by George Weaver and then Samuel Congo before being purchased by Archibald on his arrival from Scotland.

Mr. Scott was a member of the Associate Church in Galt which was later known as the United Presbyterian before becoming First United Church. Mr. Scott died in 1865 on October 4th and was buried in Strang's burying ground in what is now know as High Park. His remains were later moved to Mount View Cemetary. His wife died about 1849.

When Archibald Scott's son John was married in 1856 to Mary Rutherford he moved to the East River Road south of Galt and left John on the old farm at Scott's Corners.

The farm south of Galt was at one time part of the land owned by John Telfer. Its deed shows that in 1847 it was purchased by David Potter. In 1858 that part of the land west of the Great West Railway was bought by Archibald Scott. After his death that land was bought in 1870 by Mr. Archibald Scott's son-in-law Andrew Taylor. It has since remained in the hands of the Taylor family.
