    Notes:

Death of Mr. James Thompson, of Strasburg

The announcement that this well-known resident passed away on Friday morning last, will not take our readers by surprise. From the time the terrible nature of his injury was discovered, it was known that his fate was sealed and that while he might linger for a few days - indeed, the wonderful strength of his constitution lengthened his life beyond the expectancy of his medical attendants - the result was certain. Medical aid was comparatively useless. The fracture of the spine was inward, so that operating was out of the question, and all that laid in their power was to mitigate his sufferings somewhat.

Mr. Thompson was a very old resident of Waterloo. Probably in this section there has not been a man more generally known and respected. Of a shrewd turn of mind, he possessed a wide knowledge which enabled him to take a prudent part in the discussion of almost any question; his caustic speech and happy, witty illustrations, frequently stripping the folly of an opponent's argument or turning his shaft aside harmless. Through industry he had acquired a very handsome and valuable property. He leaves a widow and three sons and six daughters, viz.: - Mr. Alex Thomson, of Michigan; Mr. George Thomson, of North Dumfries; Charles, living on the homestead; Mrs. Lawrason, of North Dumfries; Mrs. Duncan Robinson, of Wingham; Mrs. Tillie, of Luther; Mrs. Walter Brydon, of California; and Misses Lizzie and Isabella, living with their mother and brother on the farm.

Mr. Thomson was the son of the late Mr. Alex Thomson, of near Roseville, North Dumfries. Of his brothers and sisters there are living Messrs. Robert and Joseph Thomson of Roseville; Mr. John Thomson, and Mr. T. W. Thomson, Division Court Clerk, Fergus.

His funeral on Sabbath afternoon last, from his late residence to Doon cemetery was very largely attended by residents from all parts of this and adjacent counties, there being 112 teams containing those attending. Rev. Mr. Tait, of Berlin, in the absence of Rev. Mr. Haigh, of Hespeler, who was unwell, officiated at the impressive ceremonies at the residence, Rev. Mr. Haigh joining at the cemetery.

Obituary - After some time of illness, Mr. Alex Thomson, of Roseville, has passed to his rest. Deceased was a native of Moffat, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, emigrating to this country in 1833. After his arrival here, he spent a few years in Montreal, then in 1836 moved out on the farm he so long occupied in North Dumfries, near the village of Roseville. Patient industry hewed out there a very fine homestead, and with his family he reaped the benefit of his labors for many years, ultimately retiring about six years ago from active life, removing into Roseville, where he spent the last years of his life. He was very much respected in this section. His long residence here made him widely known, and we are glad to say that he deservedly obtained and retained the respect and friendship of those with whom he associated. His aged partner in life died about two years ago, and of his family there are living five sons and two daughters, viz.: Mr. Robt. Thomson, near Roseville; Mr. James Thomson, near Strasburg, Waterloo; Mr. Joseph Thomson, of New Dundee; Mr. Thomas W. Thomson, of Fergus; Mr. John Thomson, of Seaforth; Mrs. John Henderson, Elora; and Mrs. Robt. Walker, of Roseville. The deceased was interred in the Ayr Cemetery on Tuesday forenoon last, the funeral being attended by a very large number of his old friends.

    Notes:

"Many of the principal settlers of Dumfries came in about 1830. We learn from Mr. William Cowan, River Road, that the following well-known Dumfries families all sailed in the "Argus" of Workington, England, on the 3rd June, 1829: those of Francis Hogg, Walter Cowan, James Cowan, George Barrie and Hector Rennelson. The voyage was only nine weeks and two days!

"The families of the following persons also came out together by the 'Sarah Mary Ann,' of Maryport, England, in April 1831: George Landreth, James Bunyan, Thomas Adams, John Kerr, David Brown, Adam Kersell, Robert Cranston, James and Walter Deans, John, Thomas and William Henderson, John and William Veitch, Robert Laidlaw (father of James Laidlaw M.P.P.), Paisley Block; James Little and Robert Aitkin, Blue Lake, and James Davidson, Keg Lane, near Paris. With possibly one exception, all these families were from Roxburghshire, Scotland. Voyage - five weeks and four days.
