The roots of Ontario paramedics go back to St. Thomas, where in 1961 Charles "Chuck" Brubacher created the privately owned Golden Acres Ambulance Service.

Months after Brubacher's death the County of Elgin Council is considering renaming the ambulance headquarters on Edward Street after him.

Brubacher died in April, 2017. He was 80.

Dave Rock, a young employee of Brubacher's in the 1960s, is one of the people most invested in the possible name change.

"He was a very outstanding individual and was certainly determined to make something out of the ambulance profession," Rock said in a presentation to Elgin County. "He saw that it was a real injustice the way the system was."

Brubacher was from St. Thomas. He worked in Kitchener-Waterloo for a time as an orderly before returning to invest in ambulance care.

Back then it was a loose system with few regulations -- if any -- built by private companies turning very little profit.

"How is it we needed three weeks training to be an orderly inside the hospital but no training to attend to horrific scenes?" Brubacher is quoted as saying.

Brubacher worked for years reshaping the ambulance system in St. Thomas, first as the owner of the Golden Acres Ambulance Company in the early 1960s. He later began work on a provincial stage, taking over as the second director for the then-relatively new Ambulance Services Branch, a position he held until 1977.

The innovative St. Thomas native also helped found the Ontario Ambulance Operators Association (OAOA).

Past president and executive director of the OAOA Jim Price, from Rodney, spoke highly of the work Brubacher was able to accomplish under the provincial banner....

Ambulance station may get new name. (2017). St. Thomas Times-Journal. Retrieved 21 November 2017, from https://www.stthomastimesjournal.com/2017/11/20/late-chuck-brubacher-touted-as-ontario-ambulance-pioneer

GEORGE WRIGHT. On a rising plateau, overlooking the Grand River bottoms and in plain view of the Village of Conestogo, is the beautiful home of the above-named gentleman. Here is one of the most splendidly improved farms I have visited in my travels. It is aptly called the "Bend Farm," the Grand River bordering on almoet the entire northern portion, and winding around the eastern end takes a straight course along the front or southern edge to the Conestogo bridge. It is a natural feature seldom met with in rural landscape. The farm is a gradual alope from the picturesque bottoms or level of the river, ending in an elevation of some thirty or forty feet above the level of the stream at the north. While standing at the edge of this elevation in the vicinity of the noted Glennie's Cove, where in days gone by wagon loads of the finny tribe have been caught, we saw beyond the beautiful river bottoms a magnificent and vast stretch of farming country. At our feet calmly flowed the river through a stretch of woodland of exquisite beauty, reminding us of "Parliament Hill" on the Ottawa, which in many respects it resembles. This farm has a tasteful and homelike appearance, and everything wears an air of rural thrift and energy. Dilapidated fences and other eyesores, no common upon many farms, are conspicuously absent with Mr. Wright. When this farm was yet a portion of the "wilderness and the solitary place" it was evidently a favorite abode of the Indians, for many articles used in the chase and in the wigwam have from time to time been found on the premises. It's natural location must have afforded them abundance of fish and wild game, having the river in the rear and front of their habitations. The farm contains two hundred and nine acres and is in a high state of cultivation. Mr. Wright produces from thirty to forty acres of wheat per annum, and has fattened about thirty head of export cattle during the past winter.

Mr. Wright and family are comfortably situated in a cozy brick residence furnished with all modern conveniences, and have abundance of the good things of this life. He is of English descent, and was born in the historic Paisley Block, Guelph, Ont, in 1834 His father and mother were natives of Suffolk County, England, and who came to Canada in 1832. In 1860, Mr. Wright was joined in marriage to Miss Sarah Knowles, She was also born at Guelph, of English parentage, her father and mother being natives of the County of Kent, England, and the former, for a number of years, was an employee of the British Government in Canada Mr. and Mrs. Wright settled on their present farm in 1860, and also experienced the ups and downs of life ere they had paved the way that they might live in ease and comfort during the declining years of their lives. Both are devout Christians, and take an active part in church and Sabbath
