For years the industry now operated by the Marshall Milling Company was known in this section as the Dumfries Mill. Successively conducted by Thomas Stewart, Gaven Hume & Son. and Scott Bros., it was leased by the latter firm to the Marshalls - Robt., and Anthony - about two years ago. The mill has been refitted and modernized and is now run to the full capacity, 125 barrels per day, the power used being a combination of steam and water. The brands produced by the Marshall Milling Company are known as the "Snow Flake" and "Daisy" and find favor both at home and abroad, many customers living in the Maritime Provinces.

    ________________

Lamentable Death of Mr. Ralph Marshall, of North Dumfries

On Monday last the people of Galt were startled to hear a rumour spreading that a Mr. Marshall, of North Dumfries, had been killed that morning in some manner. This caused grave anxiety as there are so many of that name in the Township who have hosts of friends in the town. For a short time the rumour could not be verified, but shortly after noon it became certain that one of our oldest and best known residents, Mr. Ralph Marshall, had been hurriedly called away by being instantly killed by a tree falling on him.

Inquiry afterwards elicited the following facts: - About ten o'clock in the forenoon, Mr. John Wells and Mr. Marshall were engaged sawing down a large tree. They had arranged their cuts so as to have the tree fall to the west, and as it did not start as soon as they anticipated, they had put in a wedge to help to throw it. As it started to fall, Mr. Wells stepped a few yards out from the butt, as he walked away noticing Mr. Marshall, immediately behind him, crossing also out of the way. Contrary to their expectations, the tree partly swung round "across the cut," as choppers call it, and in falling, struck in the crutch of a green Beech, which caused the butt to slew round a little and also to slide back about twenty feet. When Mr. Wells turned after the tree had fallen, he was surprised at not seeing his companion, and running back was horrified to see Mr. Marshall lying on his back on the ground with the trunk of the tree across his bowels. Speaking to him and trying to release him, he found that he was dead, having been apparently instantly killed, for he made no outcry at any time or breathed or moved after being found. Being unable to release him, Mr. Wells went at once to Mr. James Brown's for assistance, which he secured. To release the body the log had to be cut through, which was done, the corpse being carried to Mr. Wells' residence.

Mr. Wells cannot account for the accident, nor, although so close, did he see anything of it. The tree was falling as his back was turned, and the last he saw of Mr. Marshall, was as he first started away from the tree, when deceased appeared slightly crossing behind him, also walking away. How he was struck, he cannot say, but he is strongly of opinion that he was killed before the tree fell on him, as from the position of the body and the fact that the tree did not press so heavily on him as to kill him instantly, he is of opinion that when he reached him life would not have been utterly extinct. Mr. Marshall had in his upper vest pocket a watch, which was not stopped, and in his trowsers pockets a pipe and a pair of spectacles, neither of which were broken. Of external bruises there are none apparent, as from any severe blow.

Mr. Ralph Marshall was the youngest of the family, we believe, but even then had passed his 63rd year. He was married, but had been for years a widower, his family consisting of Mr. Robt. Marshall, miller, of Waterloo; Mr. Thos. Marshall, of Peteboro' and Mrs. John Shiell, of North Dumfries. Of his brothers, all men known throughout this section most intimately and respected wherever known, there are living, Mr. Thos. Marshall, for many years Township Clerk and Secretary of the North Dumfries Insurance Co.; Mr. Anthony Marshall, for many years a Director of the same Company, and Mr. Peter Marshall, also if we mistake not having held the same position and well-known throughout the county for his active and hearty support of our Sabbath Schools and Association. There are also two sisters living, viz.: - Mrs. George Sheard, of North Dumfries, and Mrs. Nichol, of Turnberry. The family were all born in Scotland, coming with their parents to this country about 1832, if we mistake not.

The funeral took place yesterday (Thursday) from the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. John Shiell, to the Cedar Creek Cemetery, and was attended by a very large concourse of the residents of this section, friends of the deceased and family coming long distances to testify their respect.

    Notes:

    Death of Mr. Wm. Bell

This old and well-known resident of Galt died at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. John Gourlay, on Sabbath evening last. Some few days previously the old gentleman was seized with paralysis while sitting in front of the house, and although he rallied so far as to recover consciousness to a certain extent the shock was too severe for one of his age, and he gradually sand until he passed to his rest on the evening mentioned.

Mr. Bell was a native of Roxboroughshire, Scotland, and came to Canada in 1857. He at once took up his residence in Galt, where he has resided continually ever since. He was a quiet, unassuming citizen, full of old-time memories of his beloved Scotland, and during his long residence in Galt never made an enemy. He leaves a large family, of whom Mr. John Bell resides in Winnipeg; Andrew in Manitoba, near Winnipeg; William and Adam in Galt; Mrs. Fenwick in Toronto; and Mrs. Gourlay and Miss Elsie Bell in Galt. The deceased gentleman was aged 82 years and 6 months at the time of his death. His funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, a large number of mourners attending, notwithstanding the inclement weather, to show the last token of respect to their old friend.
