    Notes:

    Death of Mr. Thomas McMillan

Once again our pen is taken in hand to chronicle the passing away of one of Galt's oldest and most respected citizens - Mr. Thomas McMillan. A few weeks ago, as mentioned in these columns at the time, Mr. McMillan was taken ill with an internal complaint which afterwards developed into cancer of the stomach; and although at times he rallied so greatly as to lead to the hope that he would overcome his ailment, and ever remained patient and happy in the midst of his sufferings, the disease gradually progressed until on Wednesday night of last week he experienced a serious attack of hemorrhage, and from that time gradually sand until he calmly passed to his eternal rest shortly after midnight on Thursday.

Mr. McMillan was born in Toronto, then "Little York," in the year 1819, being consequently 67 years of age at the time of his death. When very young, his parents removed first to Kingston, Ont., and then to Waterdown, N.Y.; but in the year 1834 they removed to Hamilton, where the subject of this notice learned the trade of a tailor. In the year 1840 he was married to Miss Terry - daughter of Capt. Terry, of that city - who has been all that a true helpmate should be all the long years that have passes, and who still survives him. About the year 1845 Mr. McMillan removed from Hamilton to the neighboring village of Preston, believing that there was an opening in his trade there; but the result was not satisfactory, and he shortly afterward returned to the Ambitious city. For the second time, however, he again returned to Preston, where he took up one of the hotels, and many of our older readers will yet bear in mind the pleasure of a walk to the old hostelries in Preston, and the kindly welcome certain to be received from the worthy host and hostess. In the year 1849, Mr. McMillan thought he saw a better opening in Galt, and during that year removed to the then village and assumed control of the Union Hotel.

During all the years that have since elapsed, and in all his various pursuits, Mr. McMillan has been a respected resident of the town. Of a quiet, and somewhat retiring disposition, it was only those who knew him intimately could recognize the sterling worth of his character, and the true love of everything manly which actuated him. Of late years Mr. McMillan has been best known as the proprietor of the seed and tobacco store on Main street; and while his death leaves a blank in the town that will exist for many a long day, the news of it will be received with deep regret in whatever spot an old Galtonian may have pitched his tend.

As we have said, Mr. McMillan was married in 1840 to Miss Terry of Hamilton, who still survives him - in fact, it is worthy of mention that his own death is the first break in his family. By this union there was a family of four daughters and one son, all still living in Galt, viz.: - Mrs. A. McGregor, Mrs. A. Cranston, Mrs. D. Simpson, Miss Lizzie and the son Richard. The latter has been his father's assistant for many years, and had himself occupied responsible positions in the town, having been Chief of the Fire Brigade up to a short time ago.

In early life, Mr. McMillan had a taste for military duty and joined the loyalist forces when they were called out to suppress the rebellion in '37. He was present at the burning of Montgomery's tavern, near Toronto, and also at Niagara Falls when the steamer Caroline was cut out by the loyalists and sent over the falls. Even as late as the year 1866, when the Fenians made their raid on Canada, our old friend showed his spirit by being the first to volunteer as a member of the "home guard" for this town and he retained that position until the collapse of that outrageous "invasion."

The funeral of Mr. McMillan took place on Sabbath afternoon last, and was one of the largest ever held in the town. Very many friends were present from Hamilton, Toronto, Guelph, Waterloo, Berlin, and other distant places, while we may say that every family in the town was present. The floral decoration were numerous and beautiful, comprising of cross from Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hunter, Hamilton; hand boquet, Mrs. John Kay, Galt; anchor, the Misses McMillan, same road; wreath, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Evans, Hamilton; cut flowers, Mrs. R. Jaffray, town; wreath, Mrs. D. Howell; cross, Mrs. John Cherry; wreath, Miss Bessie Macindoe; wreath, Miss Tilly; everlastings, Mrs. John Wells; anchor, Mrs. Dr. Vardon; wreath, his son. The services at the church and in the cemetery were most impressively read by Rev. Mr. Ridley, the choir rendering some appropriate music in the church; and as the solemn words "dust to dust," "ashes to ashes," fell from the lips of the Rev. gentlemen at the grave, there were many with whom memory was busy, and before whose eyes passed as n a flash the shadow of days that can never, never more return.
