BAUMAN. - Silas Bauman was born in Waterloo Twp., Waterloo, Co., Ont., Aug. 27, 1861; died Jan. 21, 1913; aged 51y. 4m. 25d. He was married to Lydia Ann Groff in 1886. To this union were born 9 sons and 4 daughters. Two of the oldest sons preceded him to the world beyond. He leaves a sorrowing widow, 11 children all at home, an aged father, 6 brothers, 1 sister, and a large community of neighbors and friends. He was converted in his early years and joined the Mennonite Church and remained a faithful member. He was ordained to the office of deacon 16 years ago and performed his duties faithfully. He was ailing for a few months and by examination of the doctors it was found that a growth in the stomach was the cause. The doctor told him his case was serious. He was consecrated to the Lord and set his possessions in order and waited patiently for the end. He was in sound mind within three hours of death. He chose his text, I Pet. 1. He also appointed A.B. Gingerich to preach in German and O.D. Snider in English. Funeral Jan. 24 was largely attended and long to be remembered. Buried in the cemetery adjoining his home. The beyond was more precious to him as he drew nigh. He expressed himself, "Death shall not destroy my comfort, Christ shall guide me through the gloom."

Bauman.-Lydia Ann, daughter of Abram G. and Mary (Eby) Groff, was born in Waterloo Twp., Ont., Nov. 27, 1862; passed away at her home, Kitchener, Ont., May 8, 1949; aged 86 y. 5 m. 11 d. At the age of nine, through the influence of a Christian school teacher, she accepted Christ and at the age of sixteen united with the Christian Eby Mennonite Church, Berlin, Ont., which is now the First Mennonite Church of Kitchener. On Feb. 7, 1886, she was united in marriage to Silas Bauman. A few years after their marriage he became deacon of the Mennonite Church at Floradale. Forty years of her life thereafter were spent near Floradale. Her husband predeceased her on Jan. 21, 1913. Surviving are 8 children (Norman and Silas, Leetonia, Ohio; Oliver and Edmund, Kitchener, Ont.; Irvin, Salem, Ohio; James. Oyster Point, Va.; Louida and Salome, Kitchener, Ont.), 2 brothers (Abram, Winnipeg, Man.; and Jacob, Hamilton, Ont.), 2 sisters (Mrs. Ira Bauman, Waterloo, Ont.; and Mrs. Frank Meier, Paris, Ont.), 16 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. Two daughters (Mary and Ada) and 3 sons (Caleb, Isaiah, and Ephraim) preceded her in death. She was a true "mother in Israel." Her fellowship and counsel were widely sought; her influence extended far beyond her own congregation and denomination. During the latter years of her life she was a faithful and much-appreciated member of the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener. Funeral services were held at the home by O. D. Snider and at the church by Merle Shantz, assisted by A. R. Shelly. Burial was made in the North Woolwich Cemetery.

Bauman - Martin H. Bauman was born Dec. 21, 1834; died Jan. 21, 1915; aged 80 y. 1 m. He was married to Rebecca Shantz. This union was blessed with 10 children, of whom 7 are still living; also 66 out of 80 grandchildren, and 7 of 8 great-grandchildren. He joined the Mennonite Church early in life and remained faithful to the end. He was one of those who could give good advice on many subjects, and his advice and example many do well to follow. Services and burial at Martin's Church near St. Jacob's Ont., Jan. 24, conducted by Ezra Martin and Tobias Martin.

Joseph Baumann, "the second son of Wendel Baumann and his wife Maria (Huber) Baumann, was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, March 8th, 1796, came to Canada in 1819 and settled three miles north-west of the town of Waterloo, where he died December 21st, 1864. They had a family of seven children. "

Joseph Baumann, "son of Wendel and Mary (Huber) Baumann, grandson of Christian Baumann, and great grandson of the old progenitor, Wendel Baumann, was born in the Alleghany Valley, Berks County, Pennsylvania, March 8th, 1796. In May, 1819, he left his native home and came to Canada, arriving at old Abraham Erb's place in Waterloo, some time in the month of June. After being here for a few weeks he engaged himself to Abraham Erb to manufacture flour barrels, and other ware belonging to the coopering trade. He had his home with old Christian Schantz who resided on a large farm, about one and one-half miles south-east of Berlin, now in possession Aaron B. Shantz. Here he formed the acquaintance of Anna, the eldest daughter of Christian Shantz, whom he married September 23rd, 1821. She was born October 19th, 1801, and died October 19th, 1822, aged 21 years. This union, although of but thirteen months duration, was blessed with one child, a daughter named Anna, who was born July 16th, 1822, and died August 10th, 1822, aged 25 days. After the decease of his wife he still continued in the services of old Abraham Erb, and had his home with his father-in-law. Some time during the year 1824 he formed an acquaintance with Elizabeth, daughter of George and Barbara (Good) Hoffman. She was born February 12th, 1795. On February 20th, 1825 they were married. In the spring of the same year they moved on their farm, being composed of lot No. 27, German Company's Tract. Here they resided until their deaths. He died December 21st, 1864, and she died May 6th, 1879. Their family consists of seven children,"

Henry Shantz, "the second youngest son of Christian and Hannah (Paul) Shantz, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, November 3rd, 1804. In 1810 he came to Canada with his parents and spent his boyhood days on his father's farm on the west side of the Grand River at the Toll Bridge (Freeport). On September 23rd, 1828, he was married to Lydia, daughter of Peter and Anna (Zimmerman) Martin. She was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, August 2nd, 1810, and came to Canada when nine years old (1819). In 1829 they moved to North Dumfries Township, about two miles south of Roseville, where they resided until his death which took place October 4th, 1877. He was a minister of the Mennonite Church for a number of years and later on he was ordained bishop which position he filled with honor unto his end. He had a family of ten children"

Roseville Mennonite Church (Detweiler Meeting House)

Services began in homes in the area with the arrival of the first settlers around 1822. A first meeting house was built about 1830 approximately a half-mile west of Roseville, on the south side of the road. One acre of land on the northeast corner of Lot 37, Concession 11, North Dumfries Township, was transferred from Samuel C. Snyder. The deed for the property was dated 1830, but it was not registered until August 1842. A stone meeting house was built in 1855 just slightly east of the old log meeting house; the church was dedicated on November 25, 1855 by the congregation's first minister, Jacob F. Detweiler. Henry Shantz, Enoch Detweiler and Solomon Gehman were the ministers who followed Jacob F. Detweiler.

Sunday School began in 1924 and in 1933 Young People's Bible Meetings were organized. The latter meetings were held in conjunction with those of the Blenheim Mennonite Church. A Sunday School classroom was added to the Detweiler church in 1956.

Moses Bowman, a layman from First Mennonite Church in Kitchener, was ordained minister to Detweiler Mennonite Church in 1938 where he continued to serve until the time of his death in 1964. The small congregation was served by visiting ministers until it disbanded in January 1966. Some of the remaining families are reported to have joined with Blenheim Mennonite Church at that time.

She is quite well and seems to enjoy life, but of late, through a mild stroke of paralysis, she lost the use of her lower limbs.":

Andrew Groff, "son of John and Anna (Moyer) Graff, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, April 18th, 1793. His boyhood days were spent in acquiring a business education which proved of great benefit to him in later years. At the age of seventeen he made choice of the milling business as the most pleasing to his taste. His first years of apprenticeship were served in Earl Township where he remained until 1822 when he was induced by others to seek his fortune either in the West or in Canada. Being persuaded by one Joseph Mosser and others who were on the point of leaving for Canada, to join in with their company, he came to Waterloo in the fall of 1822 and found everything most satisfactory. As he was a miller by trade, old Abraham Erb wanted him to take charge of his grist mills which he intended to do after moving to Canada. After being here a short time and making arrangements to move to Canada he started again for Pennsylvania. Arriving at home in safety and spending a few weeks in visiting friends, he then set out for his new home. He left Pennsylvania with his wife and family of four children and made the trip to Canada in seventeen days. On his arrival at Waterloo in November, 1822, he was engaged by Abraham Erb to work on the saw mill where he remained three weeks, after which he entered the employ of Mr. Shade of Galt where he remained for nearly two years, and acquired a considerable amount of cash. He then purchased 200 acres of land half way between Preston and Galt and in a few years he was the proprietor of a store, tavern, grist mill, saw mill, and distillery, from all of which he soon realized quite a fortune, becoming one of the wealthiest men in the county. In 1848 he sold this property and purchased the farm of the late David Erb, north of the town of Waterloo, now in possession of his son Jacob. During the close of his life he lived on the place now possessed by Mr. F. Scheifle, a little to the north of the town of Waterloo. Here he died May 11th, 1877. He was married in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1815, to Annie, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Reist) Huber. She was born October 15th, 1795, and died in Waterloo County, Ontario, September 19th, 1865. They had a family of twelve children."

SAMUEL GROFF. PRESIDENT NORTH WEST BUTTON CO.

Mr. Samuel Groff, though not a native born Berliner, still is a son of the fine old County of which Berlin is the chief town. He comes of Pennsylvania German stock. His grand father was Andrew Groff who learned the trade of Miller in his home state-Pennsylvania. In 1822 he came to Waterloo and after a few years spent there and at Galt, he acquired a large tract of land near Preston, where he carried on farming, saw-milling, a grist mill, store, hotel and distillery and became one of the wealthiest men in the county. His eldest son, Isaac, was the father of the subject of this sketch, who was born near Freeport in 1847. He early entered mercantile life in the late J. Hoffman's store and was one of the earlier merchants in Berlin. He was head of the firm Groff and Hymmen for many years, a house that was among the largest in the county. The name of Groff in Waterloo in the nineteenth century was associated with the raising of Shorthorn cattle.

Andrew Groff of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, settled in 1822 on 170 acres at the location of the Galt Country Club. He later owned a grist mill, general store, tavern and a distillery. In the 1840s the family moved to Waterloo where his sons and grandsons, with outstanding success, bred and raised Shorthorn cattle.

A Knight of Warlaby, imported from Scotland, proved to be an outstanding sire. A son, A Baron of Waterloo," in 1882 was Grand Champion at the leading Canadian show at Kingston. In 1886 he was champion at Guelph. He was then sold to the Hon. George Brown. This bull sired what was probably the best show herd in Canada, winning awards on the American and Canadian show circuits. The Groffs were justifiably proud of their reputation as Shorthorn breeders.

Isaac Eby, "the eldest son of Benjamin Eby, was born in Berlin, July 30th, 1808. He spent his single days at home on his father's farm. On October 30th, 1831, he was married to Veronica, daughter of John and Mary (Shantz) Shoemaker, who was born February 2nd, 1815, and died July 20th, 1894. In November of the same year of their marriage they moved on their farm, situated two and one-half miles east of Berlin, being the north-west part of lot No. 120, German Company's Tract, in the township and county of Waterloo, containing by admeasurement 188 acres. The farm was, with the exception of a few acres where their first house and log stables stood, heavily timbered with all kinds of hard wood. Wolves, bears and deer were quite numerous then, and the howling of wolves was their evening band. Here they lived for nearly forty-three years. A few months before his death he disposed of his farm to Mr. Moses Betzner. Of the numerous assistants they had on their farm George Schmidt, afterwards a minister of the Gospel in the Mennonite Church, James Potter, now residing in Berlin, Jacob Becker, Barbara Rudy, now Mrs. Valentine Knechtel and mother of Rev. S. R. Knechtel, and Martha Allardyce, now of Toronto, were their favorites. These were always considered as members of their family. To Isaac Eby and his wife was born a family of ten children"

Veronica (daughter of Johannes "John" Schumacher and Maria "Mary" Shantz) was born 2 Feb 1815, Frederick Twp., Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania; died 20 Jul 1894, Kitchener, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; was buried , First Mennonite Cemetery, Kitchener, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada. Veronica Shoemaker, "was born February 2nd, 1815, and came to Canada with her mother in 1829. On October 30th, 1831, she was married to Isaac Eby and in November of the same year they moved two miles east of Berlin, on the farm now owned by John Schmitt where they resided until his death, in May, 1874. She then moved to Berlin where she died July 20th, 1894."

Eby.-At her residence, King St. East, Berlin, Ontario, at 9-50 A.M., July 20, 1894, Sister Veronica Eby, widow of the late Bro. Isaac Eby, aged 79 y. 5 m. 18 d. Funeral on the 23d at 2 o'clock, from her late residence to the Mennonite Cemetery. Services were conducted in English by S. R. Knechtel, (Evangelical) from John 11:25, 26, and in German by Bro. Sam'l Bowman, from 2 Cor. 3:1. A large concourse of friends and relatives had gathered to pay their last tributes of respect to the deceased sister.

Many could not get into the spacious meeting house. Thus one by one the first generations of Canadian born settlers in Waterloo county pass away. Her husband, Bro. Isaac Eby, was the first white child born in Waterloo county. Sis Eby was an earnest Christian, and her place in the Eby Mennonite M. H. in Berlin was very seldom vacant at the time of meeting. Since the death of Bro. Eby she had been living in town. She leaves a family of children grandchildren and great grandchildren and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn her departure. Several of her children preceded her to the grave. Peace to her ashes.
