    Fatal Shooting Accident in Puslinch

A shooting accident of a painful and fatal nature occurred on the farm of John Scott of Killean on Friday afternoon, October 3, 1884 about 3 or 4 o'clock. Two of his hired men, Robert Burmaster and Henry Halliday, were leaving the house on their way to enjoy an afternoon's shooting. While Halliday was opening the gate, Mr. Burmaster was coming out of the woodshed, adjusting a cartridge in a breech loader and when closing up the breech the gun, by some means, was discharged, the whole charge striking Halliday behind the leg, between the knee and thigh, shattering the leg to a jelly. The two men were only about 4 feet distant from each other at the time. John Scott, a young son of John Scott Sr., who witnessed the accident, immediately gave the alarm and medical aid was at once sent for, everything being done in the meantime that could be thought of to staunch the flow of blood and relieve the pain of the sufferer. Dr. McIntyre and Dr. Swan from Hespeler were soon in attendance and did all in their power to save the man's life but without avail, as he died about half past eight in the evening. Mr. Halliday was about 26 years of age and has been in Mr. Scott's service since spring, coming to him from somewhere near Ayr. He leaves a wife and young child. He was the son-in-law of James Henderson of Reidsville, near Ayr. Mr. Scott was in the city this morning, making arrangements for the funeral and he telegraphed Mr. Halliday's mother, Mrs. McLean, who resides in Harriston. Burial in Cedar Creek Cemetery on Sunday. The medical gentlemen considered that it was not necessary to hold an inquest, as the evidence was abundant that the shooting was purely accidental. It is said, however, that one of the justices of the peace, Mr. Donald McPherson, in Killean intends holding one before Coroner Keating. Mr. Burmaster feels his position keenly, in being accidentally instrumental in causing his companion's death and has broken the gun to pieces.

-An inquest was held the following day with a finding that Henry Halliday died as a result of an accident.

-Information from the marriage certificate: Born c. 1858 in North Dumfries, son of John Ross and May Halliday. Married Jessie A. Henderson on Apr. 24, 1883.
