On November 7th, 1843 he was married to Susannah, daughter of Abraham and Rachel (Dierstein) Clemens. She was born in Waterloo County, Ontario, August 23rd, 1821, and died February 19th, 1874. In 1877 he sold his farm to Mr. J. Rellinger and moved to the town of Waterloo where he died suddenly, February 27th, 1887. Their family consisted of nine children, three sons and six daughters."

An Old Resident Gone

The Berlin News of Tuesday had the following: - "Mr. Moses Bowman, of Waterloo, died yesterday at the age of 71. He was an old and highly esteemed citizen of the county, native in fact, and leaves a large family of grown up children. He was up to eight or ten years ago one of our largest and prosperous famers, when he sold out to spend the remainder of his days free form the toils and cares of business, residing in Waterloo. His death will be regretted by a large number of friends and acquaintances."

A-1-71 Samuel Bowers: Probate of Will of Samuel Bowers, formerly of the Township of Waterloo, Yeoman, deceased, granted by W. Miller, Esq., Judge, the first day of May One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty Five, Executors in such Will, the same reading in words following:-

I Samuel Bowers of the Township of Waterloo, Yeoman… First: I give and bequeath to me beloved wife any whole household and kitchen furniture, my Buggy and Harness, one cow, and two Pigs, to have and to hold for ever as her property, all but the Kitchen clock and family bible is to belong to my youngest son, Samuel, after her decease, with the use of the dwelling house at present occupied by us, and the use of the yard, and fruit as specified in the article of agreement made between me and me son William, and an annuity of twenty-five pounds ten shillings current money of Canada, payable yearly during her widowhood. Second: I appoint my Executors after mentioned, to pay to my son Levi the sum of three hundred pounds, as the full amount of his paternal inheritance, when becoming to the age of twenty-one. Third: I authorize my Executors to furnish means necessary to my youngest son Samuel to complete his studies properly and then to pay to him out of my Estate the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds, as the balance of his paternal inheritance. Fourth: I leave and bequeath to each of my daughters unpaid the sum of two hundred and twenty five pounds out of the installments for land sold by me when they become due according as they most stand in need. Fifth: I leave and bequeath to my Grandson Isaac Barber the sun of one hundred and twenty five pounds when becoming of the age of twenty-one. Sixth: I request my Executors to pay to my oldest son Cyrus Bowers the balance due to him on three hundred pounds as soon as my son Samuel provides for and the installments become due. Seventh: In the event of my son William selling the property where we at present reside, I appoint and authorize my Executors to furnish and to provide for my beloved widow Lydia Bowers with a comfortable dwelling house and all necessary accommodations during her widowhood at the expense of my estate, and at her decease or departure from her widowhood the property is to be sold and equally divided among my children now living, and in case any should die it is to be divided among their children. Eighth: My three sons Isaac, William and Jacob have already received their portion of three hundred pounds each in land sold to them by me, also my son in the Law Jacob W. Bowman, has received the sum of two hundred pounds currency in land sold to him by me which is the full amount of my daughter Mary Ann's paternal portion, and also my said son-in-the-law Jacob W. Bowman is due to my estate one hundred and twenty-five pounds, which sum is to remain in interest as long as my said widow shall live or remain in her widowhood, which said interest is to be paid up yearly as specified in an article of agreement, the sum of seven pounds ten shillings is to form part of my said widows yearly dower, and at her death, or departure from her widowhood the sum of one hundred and twenty five pounds is to be equally divided among my children as aforesaid. "...Friday, March 11, 1864: ...Just before sundown Father and Mother made their appearance with quite a load!! Grandmother's parlor stove, cane bottom chairs, and what is more - a cradle, which by the way seems to be a great favorite with Melinda. She could not come because Grandmother and Aunt Ann came in a buggy with Washington, and Nelson had such a load of things to bring down that she did not get a seat. I am extremely sorry that this is the case. Now that they are going so far away that we don't know when we will see each other again, if ever . . . They have one car loaded. Uncle and Nelson intend leaving with the tomorrow night train. The rest intend going with the Thursday Express . . ."

"Wednesday, March 23, 1864: This morning Father drove Grand....and Aunt Ann to Berlin with their team. . . We have seen them for the last time, no doubt, before they bid Goodbye to Canada and all their friends and acquaintances. I hope they may find Michigan all they expect - that they may make a fortune in the land of their adoption. They seem glad to go, and still with a degree of reluctance, and how could it be otherwise - the land of their birth . . ."

Abraham S. Clemens, "the youngest son of Abraham and Mary (Steiner) Clemens, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, March 7th, 1790. On May 19, 1812, he was married to Rachel Dierstein who was born November 15th, 1791, and died December 3rd, 1864. In 1825 they moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, about one mile west of Breslau, on lot No. 123, German Company's Tract. Here they resided until 1837 when he purchased part of lot No. 111, about two miles south of Breslau. Here they resided until their deaths. His death took place December 25, 1867. A good many years before his death he was ordained a deacon of the Mennonite Church, a position for which he was well qualified. Many a wholesome advice did he give to his congregation. His practice was to visit all the members of his field of labor twice a year and during such visits he would give words of cheer and comfort to many a weary pilgrim. He encouraged them to look to Christ in all their trials and troubles and reminded them of the many cheering promises given unto all who put their trust in him who died for all. To them was born a family of eight children"

OBITUARY FOR ABRAHAM S. CLEMMENS

Died on the first day of the recent Christmas holidays, that is on December 25th last, Abraham S. Clemmens died in Waterloo township, Waterloo County, Canada West of apoplexy. He was formerly of Montgomery county, Pennsylvania. He was born in 1790 in Lower Salford township, in the aforementioned Montgomery county, and died at the age of 77 years, 9 months, and 18 days. He entered the holy state of matrimony on May 19, 1812 with Rachel Derstein of Bucks county, and emigrated to Canada with his family in the year 1825. He was happily married for approximately 52 years, and a widower for 3 years and 22 days. He sired 8 children, 6 of whom are still living, namely 3 sons and 3 daughters.

His descendants, with 51 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren, number consequently, 89 souls. On the day he died, he arose healthy and happy, sat down to breakfast after he had directed a loud and earnest prayer to the Giver of all good. He shoved aside a coffee cup which was sitting near him, and reached for the jug, to pour himself a drink of water, when suddenly, his hand fell. His son George, who had also just risen from the table, hurried over to help his father; his soul wanted to take leave of his body, and no human effort was of any help to him. He was speedily carried to his bed; but, he did not open his eyes again; his speech became weak and during the night that followed, approximately at 11.30 p.m., he slept away to his Lord. The deceased was generally respected and loved, and after he had accomplished much good, and ,we hope, useful things during his active life, he peacefully paid the debt of nature. For many years, he was the head of the Mennonite congregation there, and his eye was ever watchful over his flock. On the 29th instant, his body was taken to Cressman's Mennonite meeting-house, accompanied by a large number of friends and acquaintances, and committed to mother-earth, on which occasion the Rev. Hagey (at the deceased's house), and the Rev. Enoch Derstein (at the grave), spoke words of comfort and instruction to the crowd present, based on the text in the latter part of Verse 12, Chapter 4 of the Book of Amos: " Because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, 0 Israel!"
