Wilfred Schmitt, 21, Conestogo, Faces Criminal Negligence Charge.

    HAPPENED ON SCHOOL HILL

Gordon Rohr, 38, died early Sunday morning at the K.-W. Hospital, following an automobile accident Saturday night, and Wilfred Schmitt, 21, Conestogo, is in the county jail at Kitchener charged with criminal negligence.

Provincial police say Rohr was walking along the sidewalk at Bridgeport, when Schmitt's car skidded off the road, ran between a pole and a tree and struck Rohr. According to Schmitt he was blinded by the headlights of an approaching car, put on his brakes, and swerved out of the pathway of the car.

Rohr was rushed to the hospital and attended by Dr. N. A. Morrison, who said death was caused by a fracture of the base of the skull and laceration of the brain. An inquest will be held.

Rohr was single, and employed on the Jacob Jacobi farm near Bridgeport. He was born in Baden, and is survived by four brothers, Maurice of Kitchener, Ira of Linwood, Sam of Roseville, and Harvey of Drum- bo, and one sister, Mrs. J. Tschirhart, Kitchener. The funeral was held yesterday from the Ratz- Bechtel Funeral Home to Mannheim Lutheran Church for service, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Wilfred Schmitt, 21, Baden, Not to Blame in Bridgeport Death.

Wilfred Schmitt, 21, Baden, appearing in Kitchener police court on Tuesday morning, was acquitted on a charge of manslaughter which has been facing him for almost a month.

Schmitt was charged after his car struck Gordon Rohr as the latter was walking up the hill near the school at Bridgeport. Rohr received a fractured skull, succumbing later in the hospital.

On motion of Crown Attorney W. P. Clement, the charge was dismissed by Magistrate Col. Winter of Simcoe. Mr. Clement pointed out that evidence produced at the inquest showed that Schmitt was in no way negligent. His car skidded while making a turn, striking Rohr who was walking on the sidewalk.
