    Notes:

John Picken, Native of Scotland, a shoemaker, appears to have plied his trade here from June 2nd, 1855, until the year 1864. When he came he brought along two sons. Alex, who in 1858 was Secretary of the Hespeler Fire Brigade at the age of 21, and Peter C., borne in 1832. Both boys learned the shoemaking from their father.

Alex worked at it here only a short time, while Peter C. continued on till 1874. He married a daughter of Henry and Ellen Fields who lived where the new Baptist Church stands. Peter C. lived next place south on Bergey Street in a house sometimes spoken of as "The Hadfield House". His two sons, Alex. and Henry, were born in this house, the former on November 14th, 1857. "Sandy" as we called him was the father of William and Arthur; Arthur's eldest boy, Jack, clerks in Mark Kohli's Grocery Store which fact presents the unusual spectacle of two boys, both fifth generation Hespelerites, working daily side by side and even though the Grocery and the Shoemaking trades are in no wise related, it may be pardoned if I set down that David W. Panabaker is of the fifth generation here, Robert Scott certainly of the fourth and possibly of the fifth and that both these men are grocers.

    Notes:

Our community did not have a Police Constable in its early days. The settlement of Bergeytown, and later the hamlet of New Hope, was basically unprotected and relied on the honesty and goodwill of its citizens to be law abiding. With the incorporation of the Village of Hespeler, on January 19, 1859 the first Council meeting passed a motion by David Rife, seconded by C. Nahrgang that Henry Fields be appointed constable and "receive such fees as the law provides and only when on actual duty". The motion was carried and Henry Fields became the first police officer in Hespeler.

There was no lockup at the time, and the nearest goal was in Guelph, so anyone unfortunate enough to be incarcerated in the evening had to spend the night locked in a bedroom at the constable's house. There is a report of one such individual who woke Mr. Fields by making too much noise while trying to escape and was dragged back through the bedroom window by his ankles! The window was subsequently nailed shut. Mr. Fields continued as constable until 1873 and passed away one year later at age 63.
