    Hespeler Woman 101 Years Old

Mrs. Elizabeth Keffer Native of York Township.

HESPELER. Mrs. Elizabeth Keffer, believed to be the oldest citizen of Waterloo County, observed her 101st birthday anniversary at her home in Hespeler on Friday. Mrs. Keffer is enjoying comparatively good health. Born in Vaughan Township, York County, Mrs. Keffer is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Adam Mager. She received the greater part of her education at home owing to the lack of educational facilities.

She maried Solomon Keffer on October 18, 1853, the ceremony being performed by Rev. James Dick, of the Presbyterian church. At that time clergymen of the Presbyterian and Anglican faith, only, were privileged to perform the marriage ceremony, she recalled.

The couple resided in "Muddy York," now Toronto, for seven years, coming to this district in 1860 when they took up their home on a farm in Puslinch Township. After six years of farming they moved to Hespeler about 70 years ago.

Of the eight children, six are still living.

    Waterloo Chronicle, 20 Apr 1937, p. 5

    Rebellion of 1837:
Mrs. Keffer spent her girlhood in the then sparsely settled Vaughan Township. Her recollections of her girlhood reveal that soldiers of the Rebellion of 1837 drilled on her father's farm before they attempted their coup.

The Early Blacksmiths could make shoes for oxen and horses but not for people. The Settlers needed a shoemaker and by that I mean a man who could make boots and shoes as well as doing repairs. And shoemakers, be it remembered, were scarce in early days.

Probably around the middle thirties Michael Bergey, sensing the extreme need, and too the opportunity for a skilled tradesman here, sent word to his cousin, Elias Bergey, to come on over. Elias Bergey was born in 1810 and had learned the shoemaking in Pennsylvania. As to just when he came I have no information although I do know that prior to December 1st, 1845 (see Deed No. 445) he owned the lot on which Arthur Doerr's house now stands; And although I have myself never seen the old Gentleman anywhere else than sitting on the verandah of that house, I believe he first lived in a smaller one in rear of it.

He seems to have kept himself pretty well informed particularly on styles in ladies' footwear probably by subscribing to some American Trade Publication, for I have it at first hand that about 1870 when styles in young ladies' shoes ran to fine kid in various colors, Mr. Bergey was right there with bells on. My informant's eyes lighted up as she told me about two pairs Mr. Bergey had made for her; Both high laced shoes of the finest kid, one pair red, the other blue. She told me of the fine quality, of the splendid work-manship and how well they fit. To which, of course, I had to add, ''and how pretty you must have looked in them." And the color came to her cheeks as she said "Thank you." and this, after sixty years Verily, Bergey had made it stick.

Mr. Bergey worked at his trade until 1878 and from 1879 to 1882 was employed as a watchman. A daughter married Adolph Schmidt; Their son, William Bergey Smith, married Sarah Keifer and their eldest son was Ira Eli(as) Smith. A daughter of Adolph Schmidt married Arthur Mee (William's father). So Elias Bergey, the shoemaker, was great grandfather of both Ira Smith and Billie Mee.
