St. Peters Lutheran Church Zurich, Ontario

In 1860 the Canada Synod was a conference of the Pittsburg Synod. In the minutes of the Pittsburg Synod, 1861 it is stated, "Immediately after the adjournment of Synod the Rev. J .N. Muenzinger was commissioned by the mission committee to the charge of the Hay Mission, Canada West. A few weeks afterward he was duly installed as pastor of the German Lutheran Church in Zurich by the brethren Hengerer and Koessmann." In the same minutes read, "St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Zurich, Hay Township is of wood, plainly but neatly built, dedicated on the 12th of August, 1860." This first church was located on Lot 34 of what is now John Street near the corner of Edward Street. The first burial, a child (Elizabeth Hill), took place on August 15, 1860. The first wedding (August Rauh and Catherine Burkholder) was performed on March 5th, 1861. The first class of 22 young people was confirmed on April 7th, 1861.

    Notes:

After much suffering this past Friday, Maria, the wife of Herr Pastor Munzinger left this life. She was born nee Schassberger January 3, 1824 at Rothenburg an der Tauber, in the Kingdom of Bavaria and received a true Christian upbringing from her parents. In 1848 she married the widowed Pastor F.R. Munzinger and came to Amerika and settled in Munroe, Michigan where they stayed for eight years. In 1860 she came to Canada where Pastor Munzinger began a new mission in the Zurich area. From there, they spent some years in Black Creek, Welland County. In 1868 they came to Philipsburg where he had received a call and served for the next nine years. This should have been their last move. But following God's plan they served five more years in Zurich and nine more years in Sullivan. For the last 2-1/2 years she lived a quiet withdrawn life here, as she was suffering with the dreaded disease Cancer. They sought cures at various places and finally surgery seemed to be the only answer. This surgery occurred September 5 and seemed to be successful at first, but despite the medical care and dedicated care of the family, there was nothing more to do. After a hard fought battle, the Lord called her to her heavenly home on November 17 (1893)

In their 45 years of marriage they had 4 children, three of whom died in childhood.

She achieved an age of 69 years 10 months and 14 days. The survivors are the mourning husband, one daughter and son-in-law, 6 grandchildren, also a brother and sister in Michigan. This past Monday her earthly remains were interred in the Philipsburg cemetery with many mourners.

    Notes:

How They Farmed Sixty Years Ago

…I can well remember when Noah Bechtel, uncle of John B. Bricker our genial corn borer inspector for Waterloo county, shot a large black grizzly bear in October, 1863. They had seen the bear eight miles north where there was a large bush and swamp, called Queen's Bush, where the farmers had their pigs to get acorns and beechnuts, which were plentiful. Mr. Bear came out sometimes to help them to butcher. We had no selects, a pig was a pig. One day a squad went after him but did not get him. Later in October he came trotting along through Wilmot township. Moses Bechtel and Christian Hallman were ploughing beside Noah Bechtel's cedar swamp when he came walking right up to them. They went in and Bechtel brought his rifle with him. They followed the bear's tracks for a mile from the swamp, through John Forler's swamp, then across the road into another 400 acre bush. John Forler hitched his carriage team into the democrat, drove to Petersburg, and brought a man up with a hound, and John Ernst Jr. came along with his bulldog. Wm. Miller put his hound on the trail and in a short time found Mr. Bruin sound asleep. Miller fired a shot and the bear came trotting through the swamp with the dogs after him. When he saw that he was surrounded it did not take him long to climb a tree. Noah Bechtel, with a well aimed shot, brought the bear down. …
