    CONWAY, MARY JANE (Nee Roberts)

At her residence, 116 Wanless Ave., Toronto, at about 4: 30 Friday morning, September 20, 1940. Relict of John D. Conway. She was ill for only a comparatively short time. Mrs. Conway had been a resident of Hespeler for the greater part of her life. Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Walter Roberts, she was born in Talbotville, ON but came to Hespeler, where she was well known and held in high esteem, as a young woman. An active worker in the United Church, she took a particular interest in the work of the Ladies' Aid Society and the Women's Missionary Society of this congregation and held the office of secretary for many years. Some few years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Conway left to make their home in Toronto but she spent most of her summers at her summer cottage at McCormick's Point on Puslinch Lake, where she lived this year until practically the end of the season. Survived by two sons and one daughter, Dr. Harry R. Conway, Fred Conway and Bessie Conway, all of Toronto. Funeral on Sunday at 2: 30 at the home of Mrs. A. F. Stager of Galt St. in Hespeler. Many out of town relatives and friends joined those of this district in paying their respects. Rev. D. E. Foster, pastor of the United Church, was in charge of the service, assisted by Rev. J. W. Hunt of Wellington Street United Church in London, a former pastor of the local congregation, who gave the address. Interment Hespeler Cemetery. Pallbearers: Capt. W. Howard Renwick of Listowel; R. G. Todd of Galt; Douglas Phin of Toronto; Harold Phin of Whitby; C. A. Panabaker and Alex Forbes of Hespeler.

    Notes:

I believe for some time prior to 1859, Edward Conway ran a shoe shop in the building at the corner of Queen Street and the Guelph Road. Later he became tenant of Thomas Hammett across the road. After his death his widow bravely carried on the business, doing herself much of the repairing so as to provide for her small children. In 1866, Henry Benn bought the business and operated in the same stand in 1866 and 67. In 1868, John McCarthy bought him out and moved the business to the corner of Queen Street and the Guelph Road, where he carried on until 1871 when he moved away.

In 1871, Benn came back again for one year, having probably bought back the business from McCarthy. Although he shows afterwards for some time as the non-resident owner of a property on Albert Street, this seems to terminate Benn's business activities here
