    It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Fred, in his 97th year, on Wednesday, July 9, 2008, after a long and blessed life. Beloved husband and friend of Edith (Graber) for almost 70 years. Fred leaves fond memories for his children, Bruce and his wife Betty, Joan, John and his wife Ruth, and David and his wife Lynda. Also survived by his grandchildren, John (Cindy), Jill (John), Sara, Kate (Steve), Michael (Ariel), David (Karine), Hayley (Jeremy) and Lindsay; as well as his great-grandchildren, Martin, Caleb and Madison. Fred also leaves behind his sister, Doris Fisher (Miller); and sisters-in-law, Louise Sperling, Muriel Stauffer and May Sperling, as well as many nieces and nephews. Co-owner of Kitchener Coal Co., he was also a founding father and longtime member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church, serving as its treasurer for many years. Actively involved in the field of education in both Kitchener and Waterloo, he was first elected as a school trustee in 1948 and served 21 years on both the Kitchener Public School Board, and the Waterloo County School Board, chairing these boards in 1951-52 and 1971-72. In retirement Fred and Edith delivered many Meals on Wheels. Friends are invited to share their memories of Fred with his family during visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo, on Sunday, July 13, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of Fred's life will be held at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 248 Highland Road East, Kitchener on Monday, July 14 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Bill Shafer officiating. Interment St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, Kitchener. If desired, condolences for the family and donations to St. Stephen Lutheran Church or to the Canadian Cancer Society may be arranged through the funeral home, 519-745-8445 or www.erbgood.com.     It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Edith, just 8 days before her 100th birthday, on Saturday, December 5, 2015 after a blessed and full life. A lifelong resident of Kitchener, she was the beloved wife of the late Fred Stiefelmeyer (2008). She will be fondly remembered by her children, Bruce and his wife Betty, Joan, John and his wife Ruth and David and his wife Lynda, as well as by her grandchildren, John (Cindy), Jill, Sara (Lin), Kate (Steve), Michael, David (Karine), Hayley (Jeremy) and Lindsay (Scott). She was the adoring great-grandmother of Martin, Caleb, Madison, Ethan, Audrey, and Connor. Edith was predeceased by her sisters, Bernice Hahn and Louise Sperling and is survived by Muriel Stauffer and May Sperling, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was an active member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church from its inception and in her younger years, she was a tireless volunteer with the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels and Guardian Angels. Friends are invited to share their memories of Edith with her family during visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home , 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Thursday, December 10, 2015 from 10:00 - 10:45 a.m. A celebration of Edith's life will be held in the chapel of the funeral home at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the Fireside Reception Room of the funeral home.     Mrs. Albert Stiefelmeyer

    Mrs. Albert Stiefelmeyer, 88, of 547 Park St., died Wednesday at K-W Hospital. She had been in failing health. Born Emma Forler at Philipsburg, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Forler, Mrs. Stiefelmeyer had lived most of her life in Kitchener. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Her husband died in 1955. She was also predeceased by five brothers and three sisters. Surviving are a son, Frederick of Kitchener; a daughter, Mrs. C. Miller (Doris) Fisher of Boston; a sister, Mrs. William (Mary) Witt of Kitchener and seven grandchildren. The body is at the Gruhn Funeral Home where a service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Friday by Dr, H.W. Opperman. Burial will be in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery. Donations to the Thus It Is Written program of St. Peter's Church will be accepted as expressions of sympathy.

    Notes:

    Harvey John Graber was born in Berlin (Kitchener) in 1888. He was elected a commissioner of the Public Utilities Commission in 1936 and served for eighteen years. He was chairman from 1938-1946 and was again chairman at the time of his death. While he was chairman, the first trolley bus service was instituted in Kitchener-Waterloo and the east end transit terminal was built.

    In 1949 he ran unsuccessfully as a Conservative Party candidate in the provincial election.

    In 1954 the opening of the Harvey J. Graber transformer station hailed Kitchener as the first municipality in Ontario to transform its own high tension power. A leader in the Lutheran Church, he was a member of the Canada Synod ' s executive committee, president of the Lutheran Brotherhood and a member of the board of governors of Waterloo College and Seminary.

    At the Freeport Hospital, on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 1980, Formerly of St. Raphael's Nursing Home and 80 Church St., Kitchener, 91 years of age. A long time member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

    Mother of Louise (Mrs. Herman Sperling) of Sarnia, Edith (Mrs. Frederick Stiefelmeyer), Muriel (Mrs. William Stauffer), May (Mrs. Arthur Sperling), all of Kitchener, Bernice (Mrs. Clayton Hahn) of Hawkesville; sister of Mrs. Ruth Hildreth of Hamilton. Also surviving are 17 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. Predeceased by her husband Harvey Graber in 1954. and brothers, Henry. John and Karl.

    Visitation was at the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home, Benton and Church Streets, until noon on Fri day, when transfer was made to the chapel of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. for services at 2 p.m. Rev. Eric Reble officiating. In terment St. Peter's Luth eran cemetery.

    BEAN SOUP

    Wash 2 cups of beans and put them to soak over night. In the morning drain them, add two quarts of water, 1/2 teaspoon soda, 1 small onion and 1 small carrot, simmer until very soft, press through sieve into bowl, melt 1/2 cup in the sauce pan, add 1/4 cup flour and stir until smooth, add 4 cups milk and stir constantly until it thickens. Add four teaspoons salt, a little pepper, the rest of the pulp and bring to simmering point..1a

    Fred C. Stiefelmeyer Dies in Alabama

    We are in receipt of word from Cullman, Alabama, announcing the death there of Mr. Fred C. Stiefelmeyer, on Monday, March 30th, at the age of 76 years, 2 months and 22 days.

    The deceased was a former well-known resident of New Hamburg. He was born in this town, a son of the late Dr. U. and Mrs. Stiefelmeyer. He learned the jewelry trade and carried on this business in New Hamburg, Tavistock, Milverton and Baden and later moved to Kitchener. Several years ago Mr. and Mrs. Stiefelmeyer left for Cullman, Alabama, to make their home with their son. Mrs. Stiefelmeyer (nee Deppisch) died there a few years ago. The deceased leaves two sons and one daughter, George, of Cullman, Ala., Albert of Kitchener, and (Maria) Mrs. Voege, of Bridgeport. He is also survived by one brother, Chas. Stiefelmeyer, of Cullman, and three sisters residing in buffalo, N.Y., Columbus, Ohio, and Rochester, N.Y. The deceased was a faithful adherent of the Lutheran Church. The funeral took place in Cullman.

    Mr. Henry Forler

    The sad intelligence of the death of a well-known citizen and resident of the city and the surrounding district is imparted today. Mr. Henry Forler answered the call yesterday after a prolonged illness, which began last March. His death occurred at his home at 95 Shanley street. The late Mr. Forler had reached the age of 71 years, 7 months and 13 days. He was born in Philipsburg, where he was brought up and spent the earlier years of his life. For some time he was engaged in the tanning business at Philipsburg. Later he was in the hotel business at Baden. After thirteen years in the same, he suffered a fire loss, the hotel being burned. He removed to this city where he entered the employ of the Lang Tanning Company. He remained with the company until last March when his ill-health necessitated retirement. Surviving him are his wife, Amelia Lantz and nine children who are William, Edward, Herbert, Elmer, all in the city; Henry, formerly of this city, now overseas with the 70th A Battery, Heavy Artillery of Kingston, now in Eng., Mrs. Bert Stiefelmeyer, Mrs. Wm. Witt, Mrs. Jacob Hoch and Mrs. E. Engel, all of town. The late Mr. Forler had many friends and enjoyed the respect of all who were acquainted with him. The family's loss is also theirs, as also the community's. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday from the residence to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, thence to the East End Cemetery for interment.

    Mrs. Amelia Forler

    Mrs. Amelia Forler, widow of the late Henry Forler, who predeceased her eight years ago, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bert Stiefelmeyer, Kitchener, on Tuesday night, in her 76th year. The late Mrs. Forler was born in Philipsburg. In 1887 she and her husband moved to Baden where they conducted a hotel business until 1899 when their property was totally destroyed by fire. At the beginning of the present century they moved to Berlin with their family. Mrs. Forler had lived in Kitchener ever since. Her passing will be sincerely mourned by her friends and acquaintances who loved her for her kindly disposition and her cheerful manner. She was a member of the St. Peter's Lutheran Church. She is survived by five sons, William, Edward and Elmer of Kitchener, Herb, of Preston, and Henry, of Peterboro, and four daughters, Mrs. Bert Stiefelmeyer and Mrs. Jake Hoch, of Kitchener, Mrs. Wm. Witt, of Hamilton, and Mrs. Ed Engle, of Waterloo. The funeral was held at Kitchener on Thursday afternoon. Following the church services interment took place in the East End Lutheran Cemetery.

    Mrs. Elizabeth L. Graber

    A life-long resident of Kitchener, Mrs. Elizabeth Louise Graber, Courtland avenue, east, passed away early Friday morning in her 75th year. She was a faithful member of St. Peter's Lutheran church and an active member of the Ladies' Aid Society of the congregation. Deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Hopp.

    Besides her husband, Henry C. Graber, she is survived by two sons, William and Harvey, both of Kitchener, one brother, Herman Hopp, of Kitchener, three sisters, Mrs. S. Adloff and Miss Emma Hopp, both of Kitchener, and Mrs. J. McCutcheon of Detroit. Nine grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive. One daughter predeceased her.

    The funeral was held on Sunday with interment in St. Peter's Luther an cemetery.

    Heat 2 cups of milk in the upper part of a double boiler, mix 1/2 cup sugar and 6 tablespoons cornstarch thoroughly in a bowl.     DEATH OF F. BORNHOLD

    Well-Known Citizen and Ex Alderman Passed Away Wednesday Morning

    WAS IN HIS 54TH. YEAR


    Another well-known and highly respected citizen of Berlin passed away at 7 o'clock when Mr. Frederick Bornhold ex-Alderman and Chairman of the Board of Works last year, was summoned by the Grim Reaper. The news of his demise spread quickly throughout the town and sincere regret and sympathy was expressed for the bereaved family The deceased contracted slight cold about 1wo weeks ago, which, a few days later, developed into a severe attack of pneumonia, from the effects of which he became unconscious and gradually weakened until the time of his death.

    The late Frederick Bornhold was born in Berlin, the 8th of October, 1857, and was 53 years, 5 months and 11 days of age, being a son of Mr. Bornhold, Cedar street. He was brought up in the public schools here: and when but a young man learned the trade of shoe making Later he entered into partnership with Mr. C. A Ahrens, with whom he had been connected for 21 years, retiring several years ago

    He was married to Louisa Loeffler in Toronto, November 30th, 1880, and the union was blessed with five. children, two daughters and three sous, who with his wife, father and sister, Mrs. Vogt, survive. They are Henry, Berlin, Rev. John E., Philadelphia, Karl, Toronto; Laura and Ruth, at home.

    For a number of years he was a willing and active member of the Church Council of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. He entered the municipal field in 1909 and was elected to the Council, which position he retained for two years. In 1910 he be came chairman of the Board of Works. He was also a member of the A.O.U.W.

    The late Mr. Bornhold was of a genial disposition and will be greatly missed by a large number of intimate friends. He was industrious and took a keen interest in the progress of the town. As a member of the Council he was conscientious and endeavored to promote the welfare of the town. He was a good father and took pride in the advance made by his children in the educational in stitutions of the town.
    The funeral will take place from his late residence on Church street on Saturday afternoon, to St. Peter's Lutheran church for service and East End Lutheran burying ground for interment.
